Abstract

An in-plane switching liquid crystal display device is designed in such a way that an angle defined by the lengthwise direction of a common electrode and a pixel electrode and a rubbing direction of an alignment layer is set to 10 to 20°, a cell gap d is set to 2.7 μm or smaller, the dielectric anisotropy Δ∈ of a liquid crystal constituting a liquid crystal layer is set to 8 to 20, a white voltage V white to be applied to the pixel electrode when displaying white is set to 4 to 7 V, and the white voltage V white (V), the dielectric anisotropy Δ∈ of the liquid crystal, the cell gap d (μm) and an interval L (μm) between the common electrode and the pixel electrode satisfy the following expression. 11.8 > V white d - 0.6 × L 0.5 × Δ ⁢ ⁢ ɛ - 0.5 > 9.8

Claims (33)

1. A liquid crystal display device comprising:

first and second substrates laid out in such a way as to face each other;

an insulating layer provided on that surface of said first substrate which lies on the second substrate side;

a common electrode formed on said insulating layer;

a pixel electrode formed on said insulating layer as so to be in parallel to said common electrode;

a first alignment layer provided so as to cover said insulating layer, said pixel electrode and said common electrode, and subjected to an aligning treatment in a direction which forms an angle of 10 to 20° with a lengthwise direction of said pixel electrode and said common electrode;

a second alignment layer provided on that surface of said second substrate which lies on the first substrate side, and subjected to an aligning treatment in a direction which forms an angle of 10 to 20° with said lengthwise direction of said pixel electrode and said common electrode; and

a liquid crystal layer arranged between said first alignment layer and said second alignment layer, and comprised of a liquid crystal having a dielectric anisotropy of 8 to 20,

wherein a distance between said first alignment layer and said second alignment layer is equal to or less than 2.7 μm, a voltage of 4 to 7V is applied to said pixel electrode when displaying white, and a following expression is satisfied:

where V white (V) is said voltage to be applied to said pixel electrode when displaying white, Δ∈ is said dielectric anisotropy of said liquid crystal, d (μm) is said distance between said first alignment layer and said second alignment layer, and L (μm) is an interval between said pixel electrode and said common electrode.

2. The liquid crystal display device according to claim 1 , wherein said pixel electrode and said common electrode are formed by a transparent conductive layer.

3. The liquid crystal display device according to claim 2 , wherein said transparent conductive layer is an indium-tin oxide layer.

4. The liquid crystal display device according to claim 1 , wherein a response speed τ is 15 ×10 −3 sec or less.

5. The liquid crystal display device according to claim 1 , wherein said distance between said first alignment layer and said second alignment layer is 2.4 μm, and a response speed τ is 12 ×10 −3 sec.
