Abstract

Methods of treating conditions with a metal-containing material are disclosed. The metal-containing material can be, for example, an antimicrobial material, an antibacterial material, an anti-inflammatory material, an anti-fungal material, an anti-viral material, an anti-cancer material, a pro-apoptosis material, and/or an MMP modulating material. In certain embodiments, the metal-containing material is an atomically disordered, silver-containing material.

Claims (22)

1. A method of treating a subject having a condition, comprising:

contacting an inflamed or infected problem area of a mucosal membrane of the subject having the condition with a nanocrystalline silver-containing compound to provide a localized anti-inflammatory effect, the silver-containing compound is characterized by sufficient atomic disorder so that the silver-containing compound, in contact with an alcohol or water-based electrolyte, releases atoms, ions, molecules, or clusters of the silver-containing compound on a sustainable basis and at a concentration sufficient to provide a localized anti-inflammatory effect or antimicrobial effect,

wherein the condition is mucositis or stomatitis.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the nanocrystalline silver-containing compound is further selected from the group consisting of silver oxides, silver nitrides, silver borides, silver halides, silver hydrides.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the nanocrystalline silver-containing compound comprises an antimicrobial compound.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein, when contacted with the area of the subject having the condition, the nanocrystalline silver-containing compound is in a solution.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the solution is injected.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the solution is injected via a needleless injector.

7. The method of claim 5 , wherein the solution is injected via a needle.

8. The method of claim 4 , wherein the solution contains at least about 0.001 weight percent of the nanocrystalline silver-containing compound.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the solution contains about 10 weight percent or less of the nanocrystalline silver-containing compound.

10. The method of claim 4 , wherein the solution further comprises a solvent.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein, when contacted with the area of the subject having the condition, the nanocrystalline silver-containing compound is disposed in a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the composition contains at least about 0.01 weight percent of the nanocrystalline silver-containing compound.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the composition contains about 50 weight percent or less of the nanocrystalline silver-containing compound.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the pharmaceutically acceptable carrier is selected from the group consisting of creams, ointments, gels, lotions, pastes and foams.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein, when contacted with the area of the subject having the condition, the nanocrystalline silver-containing compound is in the form of a free-standing powder.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the free-standing powder is injected.

17. The method of claim 1 , wherein the condition is mucositis.

18. The method of claim 1 , wherein the condition is stomatitis.

19. The method of claim 4 , wherein the solution is contacted with the problem area as a rinse, wash, gargle, or drop.

20. The method of claim 1 , wherein, when contacted with the subject having the condition, the nanocrystalline silver-containing compound is in a tape, pill, capsule, tablet, or lozenge.
