Abstract

A print engine for a pagewidth inkjet printer includes a processor component for programming data transfer. A bus writes and reads data to and from various components of the print engine. A page data interface component is connected to the bus for writing compressed page data to the bus. A memory component is connected to the bus to store page data and program data generated by the processor component. Page expansion and decoding components are connected to the bus to expand and decode the page data. A printhead interface is connected to the bus to receive the expanded and decoded page data and to generate print data for a printhead connected to the printhead interface.

Claims (13)

1. A print engine for a pagewidth inkjet printer, the print engine comprising

a processor component for programming data transfer;

a bus for writing and reading data to and from various components of the print engine;

a page data interface component connected to the bus for writing compressed page data to the bus;

a memory component connected to the bus to store page data and program data generated by the processor component;

page expansion and decoding components connected to the bus to expand and decode the page data; and

a printhead interface connected to the bus to receive the expanded and decoded page data and to generate print data for a printhead connected to the printhead interface.

2. A print engine as claimed in claim 1 , in which the bus is a processor address, data and control bus.

3. A print engine as claimed in claim 1 , in which the page data interface component includes a USB interface.

4. A print engine as claimed in claim 1 , in which the page expansion and decoding components include an expansion component connected to the bus that is configured to expand images which are compressed according to an edge delta and runlength compression format.

5. A print engine as claimed in claim 4 , in which the expansion component is configured to generate a set of bi-level image lines.

6. A print engine as claimed in claim 4 , in which the page expansion and decoding components include a JPEG decoder which is connected to the bus to decompress JPEG-compressed contone images.

7. A print engine as claimed in claim 6 , in which the page expansion and decoding components include a halftoning and compositing unit connected to the bus and configured to halftone contone image layers to bi-level layers and to composit black layers over the halftoned layers.
