Abstract

Methods and compositions for removing phosphate from swimming pool waters are disclosed. The compositions include both soluble and substantially insoluble lanthanide carboxylates, preferred examples being lanthanum glycolate and lactate. The methods include the addition of the lanthanide compounds to the bulk of the pool water, but preferably involve the loading of the pool filter with the composition and the circulation of pool water through the filter to effect the removal of dissolved phosphate in the water.

Claims (14)

1. A method of treating water to effect the removal of dissolved phosphate, the method including the step of contacting the water with lanthanide carboxylate to precipitate said dissolved phosphate.

2. A method according to claim 1 wherein an aqueous solution, an aqueous suspension or particles of the lanthanide carboxylate is or are mixed into the water to effect said contacting.

3. A method according to claim 1 comprising the steps of:

adding an aqueous solution of said lanthanide carboxylate, an aqueous suspension of said lanthanide carboxylate, or particles of said lanthanide carboxylate to media contained within a filter or an absorber, and

passing the water through or over said media to effect contacting of the water with lanthanide carboxylate in or on the media.

4. A method according to claim 3 wherein the water is swimming pool water, said media is sand, diatomaceous earth or cartridge-type membranes, and said lanthanide carboxylate is a particulate lanthanum glycolate, lanthanum lactate or lanthanum citrate having a solubility less than 10 g/l and has a particle size of between 1 and 1000 micron.

5. A method according to claim 3 wherein the water is swimming pool water, said media is sand, diatomaceous earth or cartridge-type membranes, and said lanthanide carboxylate is a particulate lanthanum glycolate having a solubility less than 10 g/l and has a particle size of between 5 and 200 micron.

6. A method according to claim 1 wherein said lanthanide carboxylate includes carboxylate anions each having less than 8 carbon atoms and a molecular mass is less than 500.

7. A method according to claim 6 wherein said lanthanide carboxylate is a lanthanide hydroxy-mono carboxylate.

8. A method according to claim 1 wherein said carboxylate is a glycolate, lactate or citrate.

9. A method according to claim 1 wherein the said lanthanide carboxylate is particulate, is substantially insoluble in water and has a particle size of between 5 and 200 micron.

10. A water treatment method for water containing dissolved phosphate and carbonate, the method comprising the step of mixing into the water a lanthanide compound and a carboxylate compound to preferentially precipitate lanthanide phosphate while inhibiting precipitation of lanthanide carbonate.

11. A water treatment method according to claim 10 wherein the lanthanide compound is selected from the group consisting of chlorides, nitrates, acetates and citrates of lighter lanthanides and wherein the carboxylate compound is selected from the group consisting of tartrates, citrates, EDTA.

12. A water treatment method for water containing dissolved phosphate and carbonate, the method comprising the step of mixing into the water an aqueous solution of a lanthanide carboxylate to precipitate lanthanide phosphate while inhibiting precipitation of lanthanide carbonate.
