Abstract

The exemplary embodiment of the present invention will provide computer systems and methods for customizing computer-based value-bearing items, such as, for example, customizing a computer-based postage-indicia-bearing item such as exemplary image-customized computer-based postage label 1 in an exemplary embodiment of the present invention, depicted in FIG. 1 . With reference to FIG. 1 , the exemplary customized computer-based postage label 1 will bear an image 2 that would be provided by a corresponding user, namely by the user that orders the customized computer-based postage label. The user may provide image 2 in an electronic form, such as by uploading a digital representation of image 2 . In a variation of the exemplary embodiment, a user could alternatively provide a hardcopy image. The exemplary customized computer-based postage label 1 will bear a human-readable indication of the country 4 for which the postage is approved. The exemplary customized computer-based postage label 1 will also bear a human-readable indication of an amount of postage 5 . The exemplary customized computer-based postage label 1 will also bear a human-readable identifier (such as a serial number) 6 that will uniquely identify the particular customized computer-based postage label. The exemplary customized computer-based postage label 1 will also bear a machine-readable set of information 7.

Claims (48)

1. A method using a centralized computer system comprising at least one computer device for customizing computer-based value-bearing items, said method comprising:

using the centralized computer system, uploading a computer-readable representation of an image to a computer-accessible memory that is accessible by the centralized computer, according to a respective user-provided instruction provided via a remote computer device;

using the centralized computer system, generating an item-specific identifier for identifying a particular image-customized, computer-based, value-bearing item;

using the centralized computer system, generating full, digitally-signed, generic, computer-based, value-bearing-item indicia data for the particular image-customized, computer-based, value-bearing item;

using the centralized computer system, extracting a subset of data from said full, digitally-signed, generic, computer-based, value-bearing-item indicia data, wherein the subset of data comprises less data than said full, digitally-signed, generic, computer-based, value-bearing-item indicia data;

using the centralized computer system, generating a computer-readable representation of a set of computer-based, value-bearing item indicia data comprising the subset of data and the item-specific identifier; and

using the centralized computer system, merging in the computer-accessible memory, the computer-readable representation of the image, with the computer-readable representation of the set of computer-based, value-bearing item indicia data, thereby forming a computer-readable representation of the particular image-customized, computer-based, value-bearing item.

2. The method of claim 1 , said method further comprising, before merging:

manipulating an orientation of the computer-readable representation of the image with respect to an orientation of the computer-readable representation of the set of computer-based, value-bearing item indicia data, according to a set of user-supplied instructions regarding the orientation of the image with respect to the orientation of the computer-readable representation of the set of computer-based, value-bearing item indicia data.

3. The method of claim 1 , said method further comprising, before merging:

generating the set of computer-based, value-bearing item indicia data.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the particular image-customized, computer-based, value-bearing item is a particular image-customized, computer-based, postage-indicia-bearing item.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the set of computer-based, value-bearing item indicia data comprises: an identifier that identifies the particular image-customized, computer-based, postage-indicia-bearing item and an amount of postage.

The method of claim 2 , wherein the computer-readable representation of the image that is merged with the computer-readable representation of the set of computer-based, value-bearing item indicia data thereby forming the computer-readable representation of the particular, image-customized, computer-based, value-bearing item, has been oriented according to the user-supplied instructions regarding the orientation of the image.

7. A method using a computer system that is accessible for communication by a plurality of remote computers, said computer system comprising at least one computer device, said method for customizing computer-based postage-indicia-bearing items, said method comprising:

using the computer system, generating an item-specific identifier for identifying an image-customized, computer-based, postage-indicia-bearing item;

using the computer system, generating full, digitally-signed, generic, computer-based, postage-indicia-bearing-item indicia data for the image-customized, computer-based, postage-indicia-bearing item comprising the item-specific identifier;

using the computer system, extracting a subset of data from said full, digitally-signed, generic, computer-based, value-bearing-item indicia data, said subset of data comprising the item-specific identifier, wherein the subset of data comprises less data than said full, digitally-signed, generic, computer-based, value-bearing-item indicia data;

using the computer system, generating a machine-readable representation of a set of computer-based, postage-indicia-bearing item indicia data comprising the subset of data;

using the computer system, recording an association between the computer-based, postage-indicia-bearing item indicia data and said full, digitally-signed, generic, computer-based, value-bearing-item indicia data;

using the computer system, generating a representation of the image-customized, computer-based, postage-indicia-bearing item, said representation of the image-customized, computer-based, postage-indicia-bearing item comprising:

a representation of an image, wherein said representation of the image is manipulated according to at least one instruction from a user;

a human-readable representation of a postage amount, wherein said postage amount corresponds to an amount indicated by the user; and

a machine-readable representation of a set of computer-based, postage indicia data.

8. The method of claim 7 , said method further comprising:

formatting a representation of a plurality of representations of respective image-customized, computer-based, postage-indicia-bearing items for printing on a single sheet of label stock, wherein each respective representation of the plurality of representations comprises:

the representation of the image;

the human-readable representation of the postage amount; and

a respective machine-readable representation of a respective set of computer-based, postage indicia data, said respective machine-readable representation of a respective set of computer-based, postage indicia comprising a respective item-specific identifier that identifies the respective representation of the respective image-customized, computer-based, postage-indicia-bearing item.

9. A method using a computer system that is accessible for communication by a plurality of remote computers, said computer system comprising at least one computer device, said method for customizing computer-based postage-indicia-bearing items, said method comprising:

using the computer system, uploading a computer-readable representation of an image to a computer-accessible memory that is accessible by the computer, wherein uploading the computer-readable representation of the image is done according to a user instruction provided to the computer via a remote computer of the plurality of remote computers;

using the computer system, generating a particularly oriented, computer-readable representation of the image according to a set of user-input instructions regarding an orientation of the image with respect to an orientation of customized indicia data;

using the computer system, generating full, digitally-signed, generic, computer-based, postage-indicia-bearing-item indicia data for the particular image-customized, computer-based, postage-indicia-bearing item;

using the computer system, extracting a subset of data from said full, digitally-signed, generic, computer-based, value-bearing-item indicia data, wherein the subset of data comprises less data than said full, digitally-signed, generic, computer-based, value-bearing-item indicia data; and

using the computer system, merging the particularly oriented, computer-readable representation of the image, with a representation of the subset of data, thereby forming a computer-readable representation of the particular image-customized, computer-based, postage-indicia-bearing item.

10. A method using a computer system that is accessible for communication by a plurality of remote computers, said computer system comprising at least one computer device, said method for customizing computer-based postage-indicia-bearing items, said method comprising:

using the computer system, receiving from a user via a remote computer of the plurality of remote computers, a set of customization instructions for user-customization of a customizable, computer-based, postage-indicia-bearing item, said set of customization instructions comprising an image supplied by the user;

using the computer system, generating full, digitally-signed, generic, computer-based, postage-indicia-bearing-item indicia data for the image-customized, computer-based, postage-indicia-bearing item;

using the computer system, extracting a subset of data from said full, digitally-signed, generic, computer-based, value-bearing-item indicia data, wherein the subset of data comprises less data than said full, digitally-signed, generic, computer-based, value-bearing-item indicia data; and

printing the image-customized, computer-based, postage-indicia-bearing item according to the set of customization instructions, said image-customized, computer-based, postage-indicia-bearing item comprising the image supplied by the user and further comprising the subset of data.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the customizable, computer-based, postage-indicia-bearing item is characterized by a plurality of customizable features.

The method of claim 11 , wherein each of said customization instructions relates to a particular customizable feature associated with a particular customizable, computer-based, postage-indicia-bearing item, and wherein the set of customization instructions comprises a user specification of the image supplied by the user.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the customizable features comprise at least one of:

a specification of an orientation of the image;

a color of a border, wherein the border graphically frames the image; and

a specification of a magnification of the image.

14. A method using a computer system that is accessible for communication by a plurality of remote computers, said computer system comprising at least one computer device, said method for customizing computer-based, postage-indicia-bearing items, said method comprising:

using the computer system, applying a set of user-specified, customization instructions for user-customization of a customizable, computer-based, postage-indicia-bearing item, wherein a particular image-customized, computer-based, postage-indicia-bearing item results from applying the set of user-specified customization instructions, said particular image-customized, computer-based, postage-indicia-bearing item comprising an image supplied by the user via a remote computer of the plurality of remote computers, and a set of derivative, computer-based, postage indicia data, said set of derivative, computer-based, postage indicia data comprising customized indicia data that has been extracted from corresponding full, digitally-signed, generic, computer-based, postage indicia data, said set of derivative, computer-based, postage indicia data comprising less data than said full, digitally-signed, generic, computer-based, postage indicia data, said set of derivative, computer-based, postage indicia data comprising an identifier that has been generated by the computer to identify the image-customized, computer-based, postage-indicia-bearing item and further comprising a postage value, and said user-specified, customization instructions comprising at least one of: a specification of an orientation of the image with respect to an orientation of the customized indicia data, and a specification of a magnification of the image.
