Abstract

Apparatus, methods, and a computer-usable storage medium storing instructions that, when executed by a computer, cause the computer to present replacement/additional content in conjunction with an experiential data stream by maintaining a first playback position in the experiential data stream, detect proximity of the first playback position to an insertion coordinate associated with the replacement/additional content, and present content at the insertion coordinate from the replacement/additional instead of from the experiential data stream content.

Claims (48)

1. A computer controlled method for presenting replacement/additional content with an experiential data stream in a shared social space to at least one local audience member, said method comprising:

presenting content from an experiential data stream to audience members, wherein a respective audience member in said shared social space has access to at least a prerecorded partial version of said experiential data stream, and wherein other audience members from said shared social space record the experiential data stream from different feeds;

monitoring a first playback position in a time dimension of said experiential data stream on a local device for the local audience member;

detecting a proximity of said first playback position to an insertion coordinate associated with replacement/additional content;

presenting said replacement/additional content at said insertion coordinate instead of said experiential data stream content;

monitoring one or more utterances received by the local device, during the presentation of the replacement/additional content, to determine whether the other audience members from the shared social space and the local audience member are conversing; and

signaling the local device to present the experiential data stream in response to determining that the audience members have completed their conversation.

2. The computer controlled method of claim 1 , further comprising resuming presentation of said experiential data stream content at a resumption coordinate within the experiential data stream at completion of the presentation of said replacement/additional content.

3. The computer controlled method of claim 1 , wherein said replacement/additional content is an advertisement.

4. The computer controlled method of claim 1 , wherein said replacement/additional content identifies a portion of said experiential data stream.

5. The computer controlled method of claim 1 , wherein said replacement/additional content comprises content selected from the group consisting of supplemental content, parody content, comedy content, content responsive to a parental control, content responsive to the selection of an audience member, content responsive to V-chip requirements, or content responsive to program ratings.

6. The computer controlled method of claim 1 , further comprising accessing said replacement/additional content from a tangible computer-usable data carrier.

7. The computer controlled method of claim 1 , further comprising accessing said replacement/additional content from a provider service over a network.

8. The computer controlled method of claim 7 , further comprising specifying a selection criteria for said replacement/additional content.

9. The computer controlled method of claim 8 , wherein said selection criteria is at least partially responsive to a preference specified by an audience member.

10. A non-transitory computer-usable storage medium storing instructions that, when executed by a computer, cause said computer to perform a method for presenting replacement/additional content with an experiential data stream in a shared social space to at least one local audience member, said method comprising:

presenting content from an experiential data stream to audience members, wherein a respective audience member in said shared social space has access to at least a prerecorded partial version of said experiential data stream, and wherein other audience members from said shared social space record the experiential data stream from different feeds;

monitoring a first playback position in a time dimension of said experiential data stream on a local device for the local audience member;

detecting a proximity of said first playback position to an insertion coordinate associated with replacement/additional content;

presenting said replacement/additional content at said insertion coordinate instead of said experiential data stream content;

monitoring one or more utterances received by the local device, during the presentation of the replacement/additional content, to determine whether the other audience members from the shared social space and the local audience member are conversing; and

signaling the local device to present the experiential data stream in response to determining that the audience members have completed their conversation.

11. The computer-usable storage medium of claim 10 , further comprising resuming presentation of said experiential data stream content at a resumption coordinate within the experiential data stream at completion of the presentation of said replacement/additional content.

12. The computer-usable storage medium of claim 10 , wherein said replacement/additional content is an advertisement.

13. The computer-usable storage medium of claim 10 , wherein said replacement/additional content identifies a portion of said experiential data stream.

14. The computer-usable storage medium of claim 10 , wherein said replacement/additional content comprises content selected from the group consisting of supplemental content, parody content, comedy content, content responsive to a parental control, content responsive to the selection of an audience member, content responsive to V-chip requirements, or content responsive to program ratings.

15. The computer-usable storage medium of claim 10 , further comprising accessing said replacement/additional content from a tangible computer-usable data carrier.

16. The computer-usable storage medium of claim 10 , further comprising accessing said replacement/additional content from a provider service over a network.

17. The computer-usable storage medium of claim 16 , further comprising specifying a selection criteria for said replacement/additional content.

18. The computer-usable storage medium of claim 17 , wherein said selection criteria is at least partially responsive to a preference specified by an audience member.

19. An apparatus for presenting replacement/additional content with an experiential data stream in a shared social space to at least one local audience member, the apparatus comprising:

a first presentation logic configured to present content from said experiential data stream to audience members, wherein a respective audience member in said shared social space has access to at least a prerecorded partial version of said experiential data stream, and wherein other audience members from said shared social space record the experiential data stream from different feeds;

a position monitor logic configured to monitor a first playback position in a time dimension of said experiential data stream for the local audience member;

a proximity detector logic configured to detect a proximity of said first playback position to an insertion coordinate associated with said replacement/additional content; and

a second presentation logic configured to:

present said replacement/additional content at said insertion coordinate instead of said experiential data stream content;

monitor one or more utterances received by the local device, during the presentation of the replacement/additional content, to determine whether the other audience members from the shared social space and the local audience member are conversing; and

signal the first presentation logic to present the experiential data stream in response to determining that the audience members have completed their conversation.

20. The apparatus of claim 19 , further comprising:

a completion logic configured to detect completion of the presentation of said replacement/additional content; and

a resumption logic, responsive to the completion logic, configured to resume presentation of said experiential data stream content at a resumption coordinate within the experiential data stream.

21. The apparatus of claim 19 , wherein said replacement/additional content is an advertisement.

22. The apparatus of claim 19 , wherein said replacement/additional content identifies a portion of said experiential data stream.

23. The apparatus of claim 19 , wherein said replacement/additional content comprises content selected from the group consisting of supplemental content, parody content, comedy content, content responsive to a parental control, content responsive to the selection of an audience member, content responsive to V-chip requirements, or content responsive to program ratings.

24. The apparatus of claim 19 , further comprising an access logic configured to access said replacement/additional content from a tangible computer-usable data carrier.

25. The apparatus of claim 19 , further comprising an access logic configured to access said replacement/additional content received from a provider service over a network.

26. The apparatus of claim 25 , further comprising an interface configured to allow specification of a selection criteria to be provided to said provider service for selection of said replacement/additional content.

27. The apparatus of claim 26 , wherein said selection criteria is at least partially responsive to a preference specified by an audience member.
