Abstract

Golf balls comprising thermoplastic, thermoset, castable, or millable elastomer compositions are presently disclosed. These compositions comprise at least one polymer having a plurality of amide linkages and a plurality of anionic moieties attached thereto. These compositions can be used in any one or more portions of the golf balls, such as inner center, core, inner core layer, intermediate core layer, outer core layer, intermediate layer, cover, inner cover layer, intermediate cover layer, and/or outer cover layer.

Claims (13)

1. A golf ball comprising a core and a layer about the core, wherein the layer comprises a material formed from a composition comprising at least one polymer having a plurality of amide linkages and a plurality of anionic moieties attached thereto, wherein the anionic moieties are selected from the group consisting of —COO ⊖ , SO 2 O ⊖ , and ═POO ⊖ , wherein the polymer is a reaction product of at least one isocyanate-containing prepolymer and at least one isocyanate-reactive curative, and wherein the prepolymer has at least one of the following structures:

where A and B arc independently chosen from linear, branched, and cyclic moieties having 2-60 carbon atoms;

Z is chosen from anionic moieties and precursor moieties thereof; and

n is a number of 1 or greater.

2. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein A comprises at least one cyclohexyl or phenyl moiety, and Z is chosen from —COO ⊖ , —COOH, SO 2 O ⊖ , and —SO 2 OH.

3. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the prepolymer is a reaction product of at least one polyisocyanate and at least one telechelic formed from at least one polyamine polyamide and at least one cyclic ester or hydroxy acid.

4. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the prepolymer is a reaction product of at least one polyisocyanate and at least one telechelic formed from at least one polyacid polyamide and at least one aminoalcohol or polyol amine.

5. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the prepolymer is a reaction product of at least one polyisocyanate and at least one telechelic formed from at least one polyamine or polyol and at least one cyclic amide or amino acid.

6. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the prepolymer is a reaction product of at least one polyisocyanate and at least one telechelic formed from at least one tricarboxylic acid or sulfonated dicarboxylic acid and a least one diamine.

7. The golf ball of claim 6 , wherein the sulfonated dicarboxylic acid comprises lithium neutralized sulfonated isophthalic acid.

8. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the prepolymer is a reaction product of at least one polyisocyanate and at least one telechelic formed at least in part from at least one compound chosen from cyclic ethers, diols, cyclic esters, monocarboxylic acids, polycarboxylic acids, monoanhydrides, polyanhydrides, cyclic amides, diamines, cyclic siloxanes, (meth)acrylic acids, fatty polyacids, unsaturated carboxylic acids, unsaturated fatty acids, hydroxy acids, and amino acids.

9. The golf ball of claim 8 , wherein the compound comprises at least one ionic moiety or precursor moiety thereof.

10. The golf ball of claim 1 , wherein the prepolymer is a reaction product of at least one polyisocyanate and at least one telechelic having at least one property chosen from a molecular weight of 500 or greater, an acid number of 5 or greater, an acid functionality of 1 or greater, a hydroxyl number of 10 or greater, a hydroxyl functionality of 1 or greater, and a viscosity at 60° C. of 5,000 cP or less.
