Abstract

A system and method for determining the magnitude of linear and rotational acceleration of and direction of impact to a body part. In one version, protective sports equipment is worn by a player engaged in a sporting activity. The equipment includes a padding assembly that resides against the player during the sporting activity; a band removably positioned within the padding assembly, the band including a control unit having a plurality of sensing devices, a processor and a wireless transmitter that collectively interact to transmit data detected by the sensing devices, the control unit further having an encoder that encodes data from the sensing devices with a unique identifier prior to transmission.

Claims (24)

1. A real-time acceleration measuring and monitoring system for use with a plurality of helmets wherein each helmet is worn by a player engaged in a sporting activity, the system comprising:

a plurality of sensing and control units, wherein each unit is removably positioned within a single helmet, each sensing and control unit having an arrangement of accelerometers to detect acceleration data upon an impact to the helmet, each sensing and control unit further having a transmitter to transmit data received from the accelerometers and an encoder that encodes the data prior to its transmission; and,

a remote unit operably connected to the plurality of sensing and control units, the remote unit having a receiver configured to receive the data transmitted from each of the plurality of transmitters, the remote unit further having a processor to determine the magnitude of each impact to the helmets, the remote unit further having a decoder that decodes encoded data received from the transmitter of each of the plurality of sensing and control units.

2. The real-time acceleration measuring and monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein each sensing and control unit includes at least one filter that provides signal conditioning for the accelerometer data.

3. The real-time acceleration measuring and monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein each sensing and control unit includes at least one battery.

4. The real-time acceleration measuring and monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the processor further determines the direction of the impacts to the helmets.

5. The real-time acceleration measuring and monitoring system of claim 1 , wherein the accelerometers of the sensing and control unit are single axis accelerometers, and wherein the accelerometers are positioned in a non-orthogonal arrangement.

6. The real-time acceleration measuring and monitoring system of claim 1 , further comprises a graphical user interface operably connected to the remote unit for immediately displaying at least one of the magnitude of impacts to the plurality of helmets.

7. A protective sports equipment worn by a player engaged in a sporting activity, the equipment comprising:

a padding assembly that resides against the player during the sporting activity, the padding assembly having a plurality of pad elements, each pad element residing within a pad housing;

a battery powered control unit connected to the padding assembly, the control unit having a plurality of sensing devices, a processor, an encoder that encodes data detected by the sensing devices with a unique player identifier and a wireless transmitter that collectively interact to transmit data encoded with the unique identifier, wherein each sensing device is positioned within the pad housing of a pad element.

8. The protective sports equipment of claim 7 , wherein the sensing devices are accelerometers that detect acceleration upon an impact to the padding assembly.

9. The protective sports equipment of claim 8 , wherein the sensing devices further comprise a thermistor that measures the temperature of the player wearing the protective sports equipment.

10. The protective sports equipment of claim 7 , wherein the sensing devices are positioned within the pad housing such that a sensing surface of each device is positioned coincident with an internal surface of the padding housing.

11. The protective sports equipment of claim 7 , further comprising a remote unit that receives data transmitted by the control unit, the remote unit having a processor that computes said data.

12. A protective sports equipment worn by a player engaged in a sporting activity, the equipment comprising:

a padding assembly that resides against the player during the sporting activity;

a band removably positioned within the padding assembly, the band including a control unit having a plurality of sensing devices, a processor and a wireless transmitter that collectively interact to transmit data detected by the sensing devices, the control unit further having an encoder that encodes data from the sensing devices with a unique player identifier prior to transmission by the wireless transmitter.

13. The protective sports equipment of claim 12 , wherein the sensing devices are accelerometers that detect acceleration upon an impact to the padding assembly.

14. The protective sports equipment of claim 12 , wherein the sensing devices further comprise a thermistor that measures the temperature of the player wearing the protective sports equipment.

15. The protective sports equipment of claim 12 , wherein the band further comprises a plurality of band pad elements, each band pad element residing within a housing, and, wherein each sensing devices is positioned within a band pad element such that a sensing surface of each sensing device is positioned coincident with the housing.

16. The protective sports equipment of claim 12 , wherein the padding assembly also comprises a plurality of pad elements, and wherein the band is positioned within the padding assembly such that the band pad elements are aligned with the pad elements of the padding assembly.

17. The protective sports equipment of claim 12 , further comprising a remote unit that receives encoded data transmitted by the control unit, the remote unit having a decoder and a processor that computes said data.

18. The protective sports equipment of claim 12 , wherein the control unit includes at least one filter that provides signal conditioning for the data detected by the sensing devices.
