Abstract

A transoral gastroesophageal flap valve restoration device includes a single hinge coupling an arm to a body between which stomach tissue is folded to form a restored gastroesophageal flap valve. The device includes a drive mechanism that imparts reciprocal movement to the arm relative to the body. The drive mechanism includes a pulley of sufficient diameter to provide a mechanical advantage in imparting reciprocating movement of the arm relative to the body.

Claims (32)

1 . A transoral gastroesophageal flap valve restoration device comprising:

a body;

an arm extending from the body;

a single hinge coupling the arm to the body; and

a drive mechanism that imparts reciprocating movement to the arm relative to the body.

2 . The device of claim 1 wherein the drive mechanism includes a pulley coupled to the arm and a drive cable at least partially wrapped about the pulley.

3 . The device of claim 2 wherein the body has a longitudinal dimension, wherein the pulley has a center axis substantially transverse to the longitudinal dimension, and wherein the drive cable includes a pair of control extensions that extend from the pulley along the longitudinal dimension.

4 . The device of claim 2 wherein the arm is releasably coupled to the pulley.

5 . The device of claim 2 wherein the pulley has a diameter greater than about seven millimeters.

6 . The device of claim 5 wherein the pulley has a diameter of about ten millimeters.

7 . The device of claim 1 wherein the body has a passageway for receiving an endoscope.

8 . The device of claim 7 wherein the device has a maximum transverse perimeter of less than about 6.28 centimeters.

9 . The device of claim 7 wherein the passageway has a diameter of about eleven millimeters.

10 . The device of claim 9 wherein the device has a maximum transverse perimeter of less than about 6.28 centimeters.

11 . The device of claim 1 wherein the body has a longitudinal dimension and wherein the hinge has a pivot axis substantially transverse to the longitudinal dimension.

12 . A transoral gastroesophageal flap valve restoration device comprising:

a body having a longitudinal dimension;

an arm pivotably mounted to and extending from a single side of the body and arranged for reciprocating movement within a plane extending along the longitudinal dimension; and

a drive mechanism that imparts the reciprocating movement to the arm.

13 . The device of claim 12 wherein the drive mechanism includes a pulley coupled to the arm and a drive cable at least partially wrapped about the pulley.

14 . The device of claim 13 wherein the pulley has a center axis substantially transverse to the longitudinal dimension, and wherein the drive cable includes a pair of control extensions that extend from the pulley along the longitudinal dimension.

15 . The device of claim 13 wherein the arm is releasably coupled to the pulley.

16 . The device of claim 13 wherein the pulley has a diameter greater than about seven millimeters.

17 . The device of claim 16 wherein the pulley has a diameter of about ten millimeters.

18 . The device of claim 12 wherein the body has a passageway for receiving an endoscope.

19 . The device of claim 18 wherein the device has a maximum transverse perimeter of less than about 6.28 centimeters.

20 . The device of claim 18 wherein the passageway has a diameter of about eleven millimeters.

21 . The device of claim 20 wherein the device has a maximum transverse perimeter of less than about 6.28 centimeters.

22 . The device of claim 18 wherein the drive mechanism includes a pulley coupled to the arm and a drive cable at least partially wrapped about the pulley.

23 . The device of claim 22 wherein the pulley has a center axis substantially transverse to the longitudinal dimension.

24 . The device of claim 23 wherein the pulley has a diameter greater than about seven millimeters.

25 . The device of claim 24 wherein the pulley has a diameter of about ten millimeters.
