Abstract

An electrode for a capacitor, such as an electrolytic capacitor, includes a substrate comprising a metal. A carbide layer is provided adjacent the substrate, and a layer of material comprising an oxide of manganese is provided adjacent the carbide layer. According to one embodiment, the layer of material may also comprise activated carbon. The capacitor may be configured for use with a variety of devices, including implantable medical devices.

Claims (73)

1. An electrode for a capacitor comprising:

a substrate comprising a metal;

a carbide layer adjacent the substrate; and

a layer of material adjacent the carbide layer, the layer of material comprising an oxide of manganese.

2. The electrode of claim 1 , wherein the layer of material further comprises activated carbon.

3. The electrode of claim 2 , wherein the activated carbon includes functional groups that include oxygen, the functional groups being selected from CO, COOH, and C═O.

4. The electrode of claim 2 , wherein the carbide layer comprises atoms of carbon and atoms of the metal.

5. The electrode of claim 1 , wherein oxide of manganese includes manganese dioxide.

6. The electrode of claim 1 , wherein the substrate is made of a material selected from the group consisting of titanium, tantalum, niobium, and zirconium.

7. The electrode of claim 6 , wherein the substrate comprises titanium and the carbide layer comprises titanium carbide.

8. The electrode of claim 6 , wherein the carbide layer is chemisorbed on a surface of the substrate.

9. The electrode of claim 1 , wherein the substrate includes a surface in contact with the carbide layer, the surface having protrusions which form peaks and valleys, the average peak to valley height being between approximately 2 and 5 micrometers.

10. The electrode of claim 1 , wherein the layer of material further comprises unreacted carbon.

11. The electrode of claim 1 , wherein the electrode is a cathode for an electrolytic capacitor.

12. The electrode of claim 1 , wherein the carbide layer has a thickness of between approximately 10 and 500 micrometers.

13. The electrode of claim 1 , wherein the electrode has a capacitance of greater than approximately 10 milliFarads per square centimeter.

14. The electrode of claim 13 , wherein the electrode has a capacitance of greater than approximately 20 milliFarads per square centimeter.

15. The electrode of claim 1 , wherein the carbide layer is in direct contact with both the substrate and the layer of material.

16. An electrode for an electrolytic capacitor comprising:

a substrate comprising titanium;

a carbide layer adjacent the substrate; and

a carbonaceous layer adjacent the carbide layer and including means for enhancing the capacitance of the electrode;

wherein the means for enhancing the capacitance of the electrode comprises manganese dioxide.

17. An electrode for an electrolytic capacitor comprising:

a substrate comprising titanium;

a carbide layer adjacent the substrate; and

a carbonaceous layer adjacent the carbide layer and including means for enhancing the capacitance of the electrode;

wherein the means for enhancing the capacitance of the electrode comprises manganese dioxide.

18. An electrode for an electrolytic capacitor comprising:

a substrate comprising titanium;

a carbide layer adjacent the substrate; and

a carbonaceous layer adjacent the carbide layer and including means for enhancing the capacitance of the electrode;

wherein the means for enhancing the capacitance of the electrode comprises activated carbon; and

wherein the carbonaceous layer further comprises non-activated carbon-containing material.

19. An electrode for an electrolytic capacitor comprising:

a substrate comprising titanium; and

a layer of material provided proximate the substrate, the layer of material comprising activated carbon and manganese dioxide;

further comprising a titanium carbide material provided intermediate the substrate and the layer of material.

20. The electrode of claim 19 , wherein the titanium carbide material is chemically bonded to the substrate.

21. The electrode of claim 20 , wherein the titanium carbide material is also mechanically bonded to the substrate.

22. The electrode of claim 21 wherein the substrate has a surface roughness of between approximately 2 and 5 micrometers.

23. The electrode of claim 19 , wherein the manganese dioxide is dispersed within the activated carbon.

24. The electrode of claim 19 , wherein the electrode is a cathode for an electrolytic capacitor.

25. An electrode for an electrolytic capacitor comprising:

a substrate comprising titanium; and

a layer of material provided proximate the substrate, the layer of material comprising activated carbon and manganese dioxide;

wherein the layer of material further comprises non-activated carbon.

26. A capacitor comprising:

a cathode;

an anode; and

an electrolyte provided intermediate the cathode and the anode;

wherein the cathode comprises:

a substrate comprising a metal;

a carbide material provided in contact with the substrate; and

a layer of material provided in contact with the carbide material, the layer of material including an oxide of manganese.

27. The capacitor of claim 26 , wherein the oxide of manganese comprises manganese dioxide.

28. The capacitor of claim 26 , wherein the substrate comprises titanium and the carbide material is titanium carbide.

29. The capacitor of claim 26 , wherein the layer of material further comprises activated carbon.

30. The capacitor of claim 29 , wherein the layer of material further comprises non-activated carbon.

31. The capacitor of claim 26 , wherein the electrolyte is comprises at least one of ammonium salt and phosphoric acid.

32. The capacitor of claim 26 , wherein the capacitor is configured for use in an implantable medical device.

33. The capacitor of claim 32 , wherein the implantable medical device provides a therapeutic high-voltage treatment.

34. An implantable medical device comprising:

an electrolytic capacitor having a cathode, an anode, and an electrolyte intermediate the cathode and the anode;

wherein the cathode comprises:

a base material comprising a metal;

a metal carbide layer adjacent the base material; and

a capacitance-enhancing layer adjacent the metal carbide layer, the capacitance-enhancing layer including manganese dioxide and activated carbon;

wherein the implantable medical device is configured to provide a therapeutic high voltage treatment.

35. The implantable medical device of claim 34 , wherein the base material comprises titanium and the metal carbide material comprises titanium carbide.

36. The implantable medical device of claim 34 , wherein the capacitance-enhancing layer further comprises non-activated carbon.

37. The implantable medical device of claim 34 , wherein the electrolyte comprises at least one of ammonium salt and phosphoric acid.

38. The implantable medical device of claim 34 , wherein the implantable medical device is a defibrillator.
