Abstract

Compounds and methods of using these compounds to treat neurodegenerative diseases, especially Alzheimer's disease, are provided. The compounds that are provided for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases can be represented by a general formula (I): wherein R 1 is Me, Et or PhCH 2 ; R 2 is H, PhCH 2 or 6-Me-3-Py-(CH 2 ) 2 ; and R 3 is H, Me or Br. The solid line accompanied by the dotted line i.e. represents a single or double bond and salts thereof with pharmacologically acceptable acids and quaternary derivatives.

Claims (14)

1. A method for treating Alzheimer's disease in a patient in need thereof, wherein the method comprises administering to the patient an effective amount of a compound having the formula:

or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the pharmaceutically acceptable salt is a hydrochloride salt.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the hydrochloride salt is a dihydrochloride salt.

4. The method of any of claims 1 – 3 , wherein the compound or salt thereof is administered in a pharmaceutical composition.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the pharmaceutical composition is aqueous.

6. The method of any of claims 1 – 3 , wherein the compound or salt thereof is administered in a tablet.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the tablet further comprises lactose and magnesium stearate.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the tablet comprises (a) the compound or salt thereof; (b) lactose; and (c) magnesium stearate in a molecular weight ratio of 1.0:3.0:0.5 compound or salt thereof: lactose:magnesium stearate.

9. The method of any of claims 1 – 3 , wherein the method comprises administering to the patient a thrice daily dose of the compound or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the compound or salt thereof is administered in a tablet.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the tablet further comprises lactose and magnesium stearate.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the tablet comprises (a) the compound or salt thereof; (b) lactose; and (c) magnesium stearate in a molecular weight ratio of 1.0:3.0:0.5 compound or salt thereof: lactose:magnesium stearate.

13. The method of any of claims 1 – 3 , wherein the compound or salt thereof is administered orally.
