Abstract

An integrated anastomosis tool may include an effector that both makes an opening in the wall of a target vessel and connects a graft vessel to the target vessel. The effector may include a cutter assembly and a connection module that are independently actuatable. The connection between the graft vessel and the target vessel may be compliant, and may be achieved by suturing an end of the graft vessel to the side of the target vessel with the connection module.

Claims (31)

1. A surgical method for connecting a graft vessel having a lumen therethrough to a target vessel having a lumen therethrough, where both the graft vessel wall and the target vessel wall provide natural hemostasis relative to blood flowing therethrough, the method comprising:

providing an integrated anastomosis tool;

moving said integrated anastomosis tool into proximity with the target vessel;

creating only a single opening in the target vessel wall with said integrated anastomosis tool;

placing the end of the graft vessel in proximity to the single opening in the target vessel wall such that the end of the graft vessel defines a perimeter around the single opening in the target vessel wall;

suturing the end of the graft vessel to the side of the target vessel with said integrated anastomosis tool such that fluid can flow through the single opening in the target vessel wall into the lumen of the graft vessel, and such that hemostasis is substantially restored;

maintaining the graft vessel completely outside of the single opening in the target vessel during said placing and said suturing; and

withdrawing said integrated anastomosis tool away from the target vessel, wherein during said withdrawing the entirety of said integrated anastomosis tool is maintained outside the lumen of the graft vessel.

2. The surgical method of claim 1 , further comprising providing a plurality of lengths of suture, at least one having a partially-tied knot defined therein, before said suturing.

3. The surgical method of claim 1 , wherein said integrated anastomosis tool includes a cutter having a generally circular cutting edge; and wherein said creating includes rotating said generally circular cutting edge against the target vessel wall.

4. The surgical method of claim 1 , wherein said creating comprises punching.

5. The surgical method of claim 1 , wherein said integrated anastomosis tool includes a connection module, and wherein said suturing is performed by said connection module.

6. The surgical method of claim 5 , wherein said connection module includes

a plurality of needles movably connected thereto,

a plurality of traps detachably connected to said connection module; wherein said trap is configured to receive a corresponding said needle;

a plurality of individual suture elements, each said individual suture element connected to a corresponding said trap; and

wherein said suturing includes moving each said needle.

7. The surgical method of claim 5 , wherein said connection module includes

a plurality of needles movably connected thereto,

a plurality of needle tips, each said needle tip detachably connected to a corresponding said needle, and

a plurality of individual suture elements, each said individual suture element connected to a corresponding said needle tip;

wherein said suturing includes moving each said needle tip; and

further comprising everting an end of the graft vessel onto said plurality of needle tips and penetrating the everted end of the graft vessel with said needle tips, wherein said plurality of needle tips hold the graft vessel during said placing.

8. The surgical method of claim 7 , wherein said moving comprises rotating.

9. The surgical method of claim 8 , further comprising detaching each said needle tip from the corresponding said needle.

10. The surgical method of claim 9 , wherein said detaching comprises overcoming crimping between at least one said needle tip and the corresponding said needle.

11. The surgical method of claim 9 , wherein said detaching comprises breaking at least one said needle tip away from the corresponding said needle.

12. The surgical method of claim 9 , wherein each said suture element includes a partially-tied knot formed therein; further comprising tightening said partially-tied knots to form tied knots.

13. The surgical method of claim 12 , wherein said tying includes applying tension to said suture elements.

14. The surgical method of claim 12 , further comprising separating said tied knot from a remainder of said suture.

15. The surgical method of claim 14 , wherein said separating includes cutting said suture.
