Abstract

A continuously variable transmission is disclosed for use in rotationally or linearly powered machines and vehicles. The transmission provides a simple manual shifting method for the user. Further, the practical commercialization of traction roller transmissions requires improvements in the reliability, ease of shifting, function and simplicity of the transmission. The present invention includes a continuously variable transmission that may be employed in connection with any type of machine that is in need of a transmission. For example, the transmission may be used in (i) a motorized vehicle such as an automobile, motorcycle, or watercraft, (ii) a non-motorized vehicle such as a bicycle, tricycle, scooter, exercise equipment or (iii) industrial equipment, such as a drill press, power generating equipment, or textile mill.

Claims (28)

1. An axial force generator for a continuously variable transmission, the axial force generator comprising:

threads operationally attached to a drive disk of the transmission; and

a screw mounted coaxially with a longitudinal axis of the transmission, the screw adapted to engage the threads;

a drive shaft mounted coaxially with the longitudinal axis, the drive shaft having a set of drive shaft ramps; and

a disk having a set of screw ramps, the disk operationally attached to the screw; and

wherein the drive shaft ramps and the screw ramps are adapted to produce an axial force that is applied to the drive disk.

2. The axial force generator of claim 1 , wherein the threads are formed in a nut that is attached to the drive disk.

3. The axial force generator of claim 2 , wherein the screw and the nut transfer to the drive disk the axial force produced by the drive shaft ramps and the screw ramps.

4. The axial force generator of claim 1 , further comprising a tension member, positioned between the drive shaft ramps and the screw ramps, the tension member adapted to maintain engagement of the drive shaft ramps and the screw ramps.

5. The axial force generator of claim 1 , wherein the set of drive shaft ramps and the set of screw ramps are linear and have surfaces mounted at an angle to the longitudinal axis, wherein said angle is substantially the same for the drive shaft ramps and the screw ramps.

6. The axial force generator of claim 2 , wherein the screw and nut have left hand threads with respect to a clockwise rotation of the transmission.

7. The axial force generator of claim 2 , wherein the screw and nut have right hand threads with respect to a clockwise rotation of the transmission.

8. An axial force generation system for a continuously variable transmission, the system comprising:

threads operationally attached to a drive disk of the transmission;

a screw mounted coaxially with a longitudinal axis of the transmission, the screw adapted to engage the threads;

a first set of central ramps mounted coaxially with the longitudinal axis and operationally attached to a drive shaft of the transmission;

a second set of central ramps mounted coaxially with the longitudinal axis and operationally attached to the screw;

wherein the drive shaft ramps and the screw ramps are adapted to produce an axial force that is applied to the drive disk;

a first set of perimeter ramps mounted coaxially with the longitudinal axis and operationally attached to a bearing disk of the transmission, the first set of perimeter ramps adapted to produce an axial force that is transferred to the drive disk; and

a set of ramp bearings positioned between the bearing disk and the drive disk, the ramp bearings contacting the first set of perimeter ramps.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the threads are formed on a nut that is attached to the drive disk.

10. The system of claim 8 , further comprising a second set of perimeter ramps mounted coaxially with the longitudinal axis and operationally attached to the drive disk.

11. The system of claim 9 , wherein the ramp bearings contact the second set of perimeter ramps.

12. The system of claim 8 , further comprising a bearing cage that houses the set of ramp bearings.

13. The system of claim 11 , further comprising a bearing cage that houses the set of ramp bearings.

14. The system of claim 8 , wherein one of the sets of central ramps comprises convex ramps, and wherein the other set of central ramps comprises concave ramps.

15. The system of claim 9 , wherein the screw and the nut transfer to the drive disk the axial force produced by the first and second sets of central ramps.

16. The system of claim 8 , further comprising a tension member adapted to maintain engagement of the first and second sets of central ramps.
