Abstract

A continuously variable transmission is disclosed for use in rotationally or linearly powered machines and vehicles. The transmission provides a simple manual shifting method for the user. Further, the practical commercialization of traction roller transmissions requires improvements in the reliability, ease of shifting, function and simplicity of the transmission. The present invention includes a continuously variable transmission that may be employed in connection with any type of machine that is in need of a transmission. For example, the transmission may be used in (i) a motorized vehicle such as an automobile, motorcycle, or watercraft, (ii) a non-motorized vehicle such as a bicycle, tricycle, scooter, exercise equipment or (iii) industrial equipment, such as a drill press, power generating equipment, or textile mill.

Claims (44)

1. A roller traction continuously variable transmission comprising:

a plurality of speed adjusters located radially outward from a longitudinal axis of the continuously variable transmission;

a drive disk annularly rotatable about the longitudinal axis and frictionally contacting the speed adjusters;

a bearing disk annularly rotatable about the longitudinal axis and adapted to provide rotational force to the drive disk; and

two independent axial force generators, each axial force generator configured to apply a component of an axial force to the drive disk, wherein at least one axial force generator is located between the drive disk and the bearing disk.

2. The transmission of claim 1 , wherein one of the axial force generators comprises:

a nut attached to an inner bore of the drive disk; and

a screw positioned coaxial with and about the longitudinal axis for engaging the nut.

3. The transmission of claim 2 , wherein the screw is adapted to receive thrust to bias the screw away from the speed adjusters.

4. The transmission of claim 2 , further comprising:

a drive shaft having a set of drive shaft ramps;

a disk having a set of screw ramps, the disk operationally attached to the screw; and

wherein the drive shaft ramps and the screw ramps are adapted to engage so as to produce an axial force that is applied to the drive disk.

5. The transmission of claim 4 , wherein the screw and the nut are adapted to transfer to the drive disk the axial force produced by the drive shaft ramps and the screw ramps.

6. The transmission of claim 4 , further comprising a tension member, positioned between the drive shaft ramps and the screw ramps, the tension member adapted to maintain engagement of the drive shaft ramps and the screw ramps.

7. The transmission of claim 1 , wherein one of the axial force generators comprises a set of perimeter ramps attached to the bearing disk, the perimeter ramps adapted to produce an axial force that is transferred to the drive disk.

8. The transmission of claim 7 , further comprising a set of ramp bearings positioned between the bearing disk and the drive disk, the ramp bearings contacting the perimeter ramps.

9. The transmission of claim 8 , wherein the drive disk comprises a set of ramps.

10. A roller traction continuously variable transmission comprising:

a plurality of speed adjusters located radially outward from a longitudinal axis of the continuously variable transmission;

a drive disk annularly rotatable about the longitudinal axis and frictionally contacting the speed adjusters;

a bearing disk annularly rotatable about the longitudinal axis and adapted to provide rotational force to the drive disk; and

a disengagement mechanism, positioned between the bearing disk and the drive disk, the disengagement mechanism adapted to disengage the drive disk from the speed adjusters.

11. The transmission of claim 10 , wherein the disengagement mechanism comprises a toothed wheel and a pawl adapted to prevent the drive disk from rotating onto the speed adjusters until an input force is applied to the transmission.

12. The transmission of claim 10 , wherein the disengagement mechanism comprises:

a threaded connector functionally interposed between the drive disk and the bearing disk; and

wherein a rotation of the drive disk rotates the threaded connector to disengage the drive disk from the speed adjusters.

13. The transmission of claim 10 , wherein the disengagement mechanism comprises:

a preloader having first and second ends and positioned coaxially around the longitudinal axis of the transmission, wherein the first end is adapted to rotate about the longitudinal axis at a different rotational speed than the second end;

a toothed wheel;

a bearing cage, wherein the first end supports the toothed wheel and engages the bearing cage;

a pawl; and,

wherein the second end supports the pawl so as to allow relative motion between the pawl and the toothed wheel, the pawl and the toothed wheel adapted to prevent the drive disk from engaging the speed adjusters until an input force is applied to the transmission.

14. A method of managing torque transmission in a continuously variable transmission, the method comprising:

providing a plurality of speed adjusters arranged radially outward from a longitudinal axis of the continuously variable transmission;

providing a drive disk mounted about the longitudinal axis and capable of frictionally contacting the speed adjusters;

providing a driven disk mounted about the longitudinal axis and capable of frictionally contacting the speed adjusters; and

providing a support member mounted about the longitudinal axis and capable of frictionally contacting the speed adjusters, the support member adapted to move toward the slower rotating of the drive disk and the driven disk.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the support member is adapted to pull towards a substantially high transmission ratio when it is located near a side of the speed adjusters that faces the drive disk.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein the support member is adapted to pull towards a relatively low transmission ratio when it is closer to a side of the speed adjusters that faces the driven disk.

17. The method of claim 14 , wherein the support member is adapted to pull towards a relatively low transmission ratio when the transmission passes a 1:1 transmission ratio towards low.

18. The method of claim 14 , wherein the support member is adapted to pull towards a relatively high transmission ratio when the transmission passes a 1:1 transmission ratio towards high.

19. The method of claim 14 , wherein the driven disk comprises a hub shell.

The method of claim 14 , further comprising providing a mechanism for selectively pulling the drive disk away from frictional contact with the speed adjusters.
