Abstract

A computer readable medium includes executable instructions to analyze program instructions for security vulnerabilities. The executable instructions perform a security audit of program instructions. Based upon the security audit, sensors are inserted into the program instructions. The program instructions are executable and the sensors generate a stream of security events. The stream of security events is monitored and security performance results are reported.

Claims (14)

1. A non-transitory computer readable medium including stored executable instructions, comprising instructions executing to:

convert each of a plurality of diverse program instruction formats of a set of software applications to a common format, wherein the set of software applications is located on a plurality of different platforms and the set of software applications form a defined software system, wherein the executable instructions to convert include executable instructions to break down expressions of the plurality of diverse program instruction formats into a single set of equivalent sequences of simpler statements to support analysis of the defined software system, wherein the diverse program instruction formats result in a corresponding set of translations, each in the common format, wherein the set of translations express the functions of the defined software system;

derive a homogenous software system model of the defined software system from the set of translations, wherein the homogeneous software system model characterizes program interactions between the plurality of diverse program instruction formats located on the plurality of different platforms;

perform a static analysis on the homogeneous software system model to identify security vulnerabilities, wherein the static analysis includes analyzing the homogeneous software system model without executing the system model; and

insert sensors into the defined software system based upon the static analysis.

2. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 further comprising executable instructions to operate the defined software system such that the sensors generate a stream of security events.

3. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 2 further comprising executable instructions to monitor the stream of security events.

4. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 3 wherein the executable instructions to monitor include executable instructions to issue counter-measure commands to the defined software system.

5. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 3 wherein the executable instructions to monitor include executable instructions to process the stream of security events with a hierarchy of transceivers distributed throughout the defined software system.

6. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 5 wherein the executable instructions to monitor include executable instructions to pass event processing rules from parent transceivers to children transceivers.

7. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 5 wherein intermediate transceivers in the hierarchy of transceivers implement filter operations.

8. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 5 wherein intermediate transceivers in the hierarchy of transceivers implement analysis operations.

9. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 5 further comprising executable instructions to pass event processing rules through the hierarchy of transceivers.

10. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 1 further comprising executable instructions to execute event processing rules with the sensors to dynamically change the behavior of the defined software system.
