Abstract

An image manipulation device is arranged to recover data stored in a pattern printed upon a card. The device includes a linear image sensor that incorporates an array of CMOS light sensors. An illumination assembly is provided that includes a light pipe of plastic material arranged to direct light from an LED over a strip of the card as it is moved by a transport assembly. The lightpipe is formed with a cylindrical lens, to direct light from the LED to a strip across the card, and a series of micro-lenses disposed to focus light reflected from the card onto the light sensors.

Claims (14)

1. An image manipulation device arranged to process a pattern printed upon a printed media, said device including:

a transport assembly for the printed media;

a linear image sensor located to read the pattern from the printed media during transportation by the printed media transport assembly, the linear image sensor including an array of photosensitive CMOS light sensors, the resolution of the linear image sensor being at least twice a highest spatial frequency of the pattern; and

an illumination assembly arranged to reflect light from the printed media onto the linear image sensor.

2. A device according to claim 1 , wherein the illumination assembly includes a light-pipe disposed to direct light towards the card from a light source.

3. A device according to claim 2 , wherein the light source comprises a light-emitting-diode (LED).

4. A device according to claim 2 , wherein the light-pipe is formed with a number of total internal reflection facets to diffuse light over the width of the printed media.

5. A device according to claim 2 , wherein the light-pipe is formed with an integrated cylindrical lens to focus light onto the printed media.

6. A device according to claim 2 , wherein the light pipe is formed with a molded array of microlenses arranged to focus the reflected light onto light sensors of the linear image sensor.

7. A device according to claim 1 including:

a light-pipe disposed to direct light towards the card from a light-emitting-diode (LED);

a number of total internal reflection facets formed along the light-pipe to diffuse light over the printed media;

a cylindrical lens integrated with the light-pipe and arranged to focus light onto a strip along the printed media; and

an array of lenses disposed along the light-pipe and arranged to focus light reflected from the printed media onto light sensors disposed along the linear image sensor.
