Cradle unit having an electromagnetic capper actuation system
View Patent ↗A cradle unit for an inkjet printer including: a body complementary to a removable inkjet cartridge of a type having a pagewidth printhead, an ink supply and a capper assembly; and a controller for controlling the operation of the printhead to facilitate printing when the removable inkjet cartridge is received within the body; and an electromagnet assembly on said body which is controlled by said controller for operating said capper assembly of the removable inkjet cartridge.
1. A cradle unit for an inkjet printer comprising:
a body complementary to a removable inkjet cartridge, the removable inkjet cartridge having a pagewidth printhead, an ink supply and a capper assembly;
a controller for controlling operation of the printhead to facilitate printing when the removable inkjet cartridge is received within the body; and
an electromagnet assembly on said body which is controlled by said controller for operating said capper assembly of the removable inkjet cartridge to permit said operation of the printhead.
2. A cradle unit according to claim 1 , wherein the body defines a recess to receive the removable inkjet cartridge and the electromagnet assembly is positioned within said recess.
3. A cradle unit according to claim 2 , wherein said electromagnet assembly is positioned within said recess so as to be located proximal the capper assembly of the cartridge when said cartridge is received in said recess.
4. A cradle unit according to claim 3 , wherein activation of said electromagnet assembly by said controller causes the capper assembly to move to an uncapped position remote from said printhead.
5. A cradle unit according to claim 4 , wherein at least a portion of said capper assembly is made from a material with magnetic properties and activation of said electromagnet assembly causes said portion of the capper assembly to move towards said electromagnet assembly.
6. A cradle unit according to claim 4 , wherein deactivation of said electromagnet assembly by said controller causes the capper assembly to return to its capped position which caps a surface of the printhead.
7. A cradle unit according to claim 6 , wherein the surface of the printhead capped by said capper assembly comprises a plurality of ink ejection nozzles for ejecting ink onto a print media surface.
