Method for controlling the ink refilling procedure of a print engine
View Patent ↗A method of controlling refilling of a printing unit by a printing fluid refill cartridge is provided. In the method, information on an amount of printing fluid contained in the refill cartridge is stored in an information storage element of the cartridge, the refill cartridge is mounted to the printing unit, the information on the amount of printing fluid is read with an information reader incorporated in the printing unit, and the refilling of the printing unit with printing fluid contained in the refill cartridge is controlled based on the information read.
1. A method of controlling refilling of a printing unit by a printing fluid refill cartridge, comprising the steps of:
storing information on an amount of printing fluid contained in the refill cartridge in an information storage element incorporated therein, the amount of printing fluid contained in the refill cartridge being determined by monitoring operation of a geared mechanism of the refill cartridge, the geared mechanism being configured to dispense known amounts of the printing fluid;
mounting the refill cartridge to the printing unit;
reading the information on the amount of printing fluid with an information reader incorporated in the printing unit; and
controlling the refilling of the printing unit based on the information read by operating the geared mechanism,
wherein the geared mechanism of the refill cartridge comprises a helical gear and cylindrical screw thread arrangement which is operated to change the printing fluid storage capacity of the refill cartridge.
2. A method according to claim 1 , wherein:
the mounting step comprises securing the refill cartridge to the printing unit with a securing arrangement.
3. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the controlling step comprises updating the information on the amount of printing fluid contained in the refill cartridge as stored in the information storage element during and after refilling has been performed.
4. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the refill cartridge is configured so that the helical gear communicates with a drive gear of the printing unit, the drive gear being driven to operate the geared mechanism.
