Abstract

A system for securing a basket containing product securely within an autoclave or retort. The preferred embodiment of the present invention is used with rotational retorts, which generally include a rotational insert for receiving product-loaded baskets, the rotational insert rotated via a drive to rotate the baskets end over end during the autoclave process, for more efficient heat transfer. The present invention contemplates an improvement for securing the baskets within the retort, to facilitate secure rotation of the baskets and their contents, and prevent shifting of the baskets within the retort during rotation. Particularly, the preferred embodiment of the present invention contemplates the use of one or more lift bladders sandwiched between clamping platens situated along the length of the rotational insert, the lift bladders configured to expand to lift and position the baskets into a securing position for rotation, then deflate to release the baskets after processing for removal.

Claims (30)

1. An article securing apparatus including an article within a retort, comprising: a frame situated within said retort having an article receiving area, said actuator being situated in the vicinity of said article receiving area, said actuator comprising

a first platen;

a second platen;

a spring to provide bias to urge said first and second platens together;

a bladder situated between said first and second platens;

whereby, upon filling said bladder with pressurized fluid, said bladder is formed to expand so as to overcome the bias of said spring, and increase the distance between said first platen and said second platen, placing said actuator in an extended position for securing said article within said frame; and

whereby, upon venting fluid from said bladder, said spring urges said first and second platens together, so as to urge said bladder to contract, decreasing the distance between said first platen to said second platen, placing said actuator in a retracted position.

2. The article securing apparatus of claim 1 , wherein there is further provided said actuator securely engages said article situated within said article receiving area, and wherein said actuator is in said extended position.

3. The article securing apparatus of claim 2 , wherein said actuator dis-engages said article situated in said article receiving area when said actuator is in said retracted position.

4. The article securing apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a set of springs, said springs engaging the first and second platens.

5. The article securing apparatus of claim 4 , wherein said frame comprises a rotational insert.

6. The article securing apparatus of claim 5 , wherein said retort comprises a rotational retort, and said rotational insert is rotated within said rotational retort via a drive.

7. The article securing apparatus of claim 6 , wherein said rotational insert has first and second intersecting edges defining the article receiving area for receiving the article, and wherein said actuator is situated in the vicinity of said first edge, forming a first actuator, and wherein there is provided a second actuator situated in the vicinity of said second edge, whereby said first actuator is formed to apply pressure to said article in a direction which is generally transverse to that of said second actuator.

8. An article securing apparatus for use in a rotational retort, comprising:

a frame situated within the retort having first and second intersecting edges defining an article receiving area;

a first actuator associated with said first edge, a second actuator associated with said second edge, each of the first and second actuators comprising:

a first platen;

a second platen;

a bladder situated between the first and second platens;

said second platen supported by said frame, said bladder formed to expand upon receiving pressurized fluid therein, extending said first platen away from said second platen to engage and apply pressure to said article;

whereby, upon filling said bladder of said first actuator with fluid, said bladder of said first actuator is formed to expand and thereby extend said first platen of said first actuator from said second platen of said first actuator, so as to apply pressure to said article from the vicinity of said first edge; and

whereby, upon filling said bladder of said second actuator with fluid, said bladder of said second actuator is formed to expand and thereby extend said first platen of said second actuator from said second platen of said second actuator, so as to apply pressure to said article from the vicinity of said second edge,

so as to secure said article to said frame.

9. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein said first platen of each of said first and second actuators is formed to disengage said article upon the venting of said bladder of pressurized fluid, so as to release said article from said rotational insert.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein said retort is a water immersion retort.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the frame has length, and wherein said first actuator is situated along the length of said frame.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein said first actuator is formed to apply pressure to said article in a direction which is generally transverse to that of the second actuator.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein there is further provided third and fourth intersecting edges defining said article receiving area, and where there are further provided stationary platens situated along said third edge and said fourth edge, wherein upon said first, second and third actuators actuating to an extend position, the article is urged by said actuators to engage the stationary platens, said actuators applying pressure to said article to secure said article between said actuators and said stationary platens.

14. The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the bladders of said first, second and third actuators are formed to expand at a uniform rate, so as to lift and apply side pressure to said article simultaneously, diagonally positioning said article to simultaneously engage said stationary platens.

15. The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein said frame is a rotational insert.
