Abstract

Retroreflective articles having cube corner elements are disclosed, with the dihedral angle errors of the cube corner elements selected to limit the visibility range of the retroreflective article. Also disclosed are methods for making the cube corner elements and the retroreflective articles.

Claims (15)

1. A retroreflective article comprising cube corners, the article having an International Functional Coefficient of Luminous Intensity, FRO 1 , that is at a maximum value at an observation angle between about 0.2 deg and about 0.5 deg.

2. The article of claim 1 , comprising retroreflective sheeting comprising cube corner elements.

3. The article of claim 1 , comprising a retroreflecting lens comprising cube corner elements.

4. The article of claim 3 , wherein the cube corner elements comprise macro-sized cube corner elements.

5. The article of claim 3 , wherein the cube corner elements comprise micro-sized cube corner elements.

6. The article of claim 5 , wherein the cube corner elements are metallized.

7. The article of claim 3 , wherein the article is a raised pavement marker.

8. The article of claim 7 , wherein the article has a frontally projected area of X sq. cm. and the maximum FRO 1 value is at least 20 times X mcd/lx.

9. The article of claim 8 , wherein the maximum FRO 1 value is at least 30 times X mcd/lx.

10. The article of claim 9 , wherein the maximum FRO 1 value is at least 40 times X mcd/lx.

11. A retroreflective lens comprising cube corners, the lens having a frontally projected area of between 8 sq. cm. and 12 sq. cm., and having an Asymmetrical Functional Coefficient of Luminous Intensity, FRO 2 , that is at a maximum value at an observation angle between about 0.3 deg and about 0.6 deg, the maximum value being at least 460 mcd/lx.

12. A retroreflective lens comprising cube corners, the lens having a frontally projected area of X sq. cm., and having an Asymmetrical Functional Coefficient of Luminous Intensity, FRO 2 , at an observation angle of 0.2 deg that is no more than 60 times X mcdllx, and an FRO 2 at an observation angle of 0.4 deg that is no less than 40 times X mcd/lx.

13. The retroreflective lens of claim 12 , wherein the FRO 2 at an observation angle of 0.2 deg is no more than 50 times X mcd/lx and the FRO 2 at an observation angle of 0.4 deg is no less than 50 times X mcd/lx.

14. A retroreflective lens comprising cube corners for a raised pavement marker, wherein most of the cube corners are tightly packed in an array, the cube corners being oriented so that there is no approximate left-right symmetry plane for the prisms, and having an International Functional Coefficient of Luminous Intensity, FRO 1 , that is at a maximum value at an observation angle between about 0.2 deg and about 0.5 deg.

15. A retroreflective lens comprising cube corners for a raised pavement marker, wherein most of the cube corners are tightly packed in an array, the cube corners being oriented so that there is no approximate left-right symmetry plane for the prisms, wherein the lens comprises a pattern of retroreflection tailored to limit the range of visibility, and wherein the cube corners comprise acrylic and are not metallized and further wherein the cube corners function by Total Internal Reflection for both the minus 20 deg and plus 20 deg horizontal entrance angles.
