Apparatus and method for accessing the bone marrow
View Patent ↗An apparatus and method for accessing the bone marrow of a human's sternum is provided. The apparatus includes a tissue penetrator configured to penetrate the sternum, a trigger mechanism configured to engage when the tissue penetrator contacts the sternum and a depth control mechanism operable to limit the penetration of the tissue penetrator into the sternum to a pre-selected depth.
1. An apparatus for accessing the bone marrow inside a bone comprising:
a penetrator assembly comprising a tissue penetrator and a luer lock connector, the tissue penetrator having a hollow cannula disposed in non-movably fixed relation to the luer lock connector;
a driver operable to drive a portion of the tissue penetrator into the bone marrow; and
a depth control mechanism operable to control the depth of penetration of the tissue penetrator into the bone and associated bone marrow, the depth control mechanism comprising an annular stop positioned to physically obstruct passage of the tissue penetrator.
2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the driver comprises a motor.
3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the driver further comprises a power source selected from the group consisting of a battery, a coiled spring, a compressed gas, and a solar power cell.
4. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the bone comprises the sternum.
5. The apparatus of claim 1 , the apparatus further comprising:
a handle comprising a coiled spring; and
a cartridge configured to insert into the handle, the cartridge comprising a tissue penetrator and a flange operable to contact tissue proximate to the bone.
6. The apparatus of claim 5 , the tissue penetrator comprising:
a screw;
a flange operable to move along the screw; and
a trocar.
7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the tissue penetrator is contained in a housing having a circular cross-sectional shape with an inner circumference and the annular stop comprises a rib that traces an inner circumference of the housing.
8. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the annular stop comprises an arc, bar, bump, or ridge.
9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the driver further comprises a coupling end and wherein the annular stop is configured to obstruct passage of the coupling end.
10. The apparatus claim 9 , wherein the tissue penetrator is contained in a housing and wherein the annular stop comprises an a groove of finite length on an inner surface of the housing and a corresponding ridge on an outer circumference of the coupling end.
11. An apparatus for accessing bone marrow inside a bone comprising:
a cartridge with a tissue penetrator configured to penetrate the bone and associated marrow, and a luer lock connector, the tissue penetrator having a hollow cannula disposed in non-movably fixed relation to the luer lock connector;
a depth control mechanism operable to limit penetration of the tissue penetrator into the bone and associated bone marrow, the depth control mechanism comprising an annular stop positioned to physically obstruct passage of the tissue penetrator;
a flange operable to stabilize the tissue penetrator at a desirable level in the bone, the flange moveable along a vertical axis of the tissue penetrator; and
a reusable handle configured to engage the tissue penetrator and drive the tissue penetrator into the bone marrow.
12. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the tissue penetrator is contained in a housing having a circular cross-sectional shape with an inner circumference and the annular stop comprises a rib that traces the inner circumference of the housing.
13. The apparatus claim 11 , wherein the annular stop comprises an arc, bar, bump, or ridge.
14. The apparatus of claim 11 , further comprising a driver having a coupling end, wherein the annular stop is configured to obstruct passage of the coupling end.
15. The apparatus claim 14 , wherein the tissue penetrator is contained in a housing and wherein the annular stop comprises an a groove of finite length on an inner surface of the housing and a corresponding ridge on an outer circumference of the coupling end.
16. The apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the bone comprises the sternum.
17. An apparatus for accessing the bone marrow inside a bone comprising:
a handle; and
a cartridge configured to attach to the handle, the cartridge comprising a tissue penetrator, a luer lock connector, and a depth control mechanism, the depth control mechanism comprising an annular stop positioned to physically obstruct passage of the tissue penetrator, the tissue penetrator having a hollow cannula disposed in non-movably fixed relation to the luer lock connector.
18. The apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the tissue penetrator is contained in a housing having a circular cross-sectional shape with an inner circumference and the annular stop comprises a rib that traces the inner circumference of the housing.
19. The apparatus claim 17 , wherein the annular stop comprises an arc, bar, bump, or ridge.
20. The apparatus of claim 17 , further comprising a driver having a coupling end, wherein the annular stop is configured to obstruct passage of the coupling end.
21. The apparatus claim 20 , wherein the tissue penetrator is contained in a housing and wherein the annular stop comprises an a groove of finite length on an inner surface of the housing and a corresponding ridge on an outer circumference of the coupling end.
22. The apparatus of claim 17 , wherein the bone comprises the sternum.
23. An apparatus for accessing the bone marrow inside a bone comprising:
a penetrator assembly comprising a tissue penetrator configured to penetrate the bone marrow, and a luer lock connector, the tissue penetrator comprising an outer cannula and an inner trocar, the outer cannula disposed in non-movably fixed relation to the luer lock connector;
a driver operable to drive the tissue penetrator into the bone marrow;
a flange operable to stabilize the tissue penetrator after the cannula is inserted into the bone marrow, the flange moveable along a longitudinal axis of the tissue penetrator; and
a depth control mechanism operable to limit penetration of the tissue penetrator into the bone and associated bone marrow, the depth control mechanism comprising an annular stop positioned to physically obstruct passage of the tissue penetrator.
24. The apparatus of claim 23 , wherein the tissue penetrator is contained in a housing having a circular cross-sectional shape with an inner circumference and the annular stop comprises a rib that traces the inner circumference of the housing.
25. The apparatus claim 23 , wherein the annular stop comprises an arc, bar, bump, or ridge.
26. The apparatus of claim 23 , wherein the driver further comprises a coupling end and wherein the annular stop is configured to obstruct passage of the coupling end.
27. The apparatus claim 26 , wherein the tissue penetrator is contained in a housing and wherein the annular stop comprises an a groove of finite length on an inner surface of the housing and a corresponding ridge on an outer circumference of the coupling end.
28. The apparatus of claim 23 , wherein the bone comprises the sternum.
