Modular elongate printer
View Patent ↗A printer for a modular image capture and printing system has an elongate body with connectors formed at opposing ends to engage other modules of the system. A data bus runs along the body and interconnects the end connectors. Slots along opposing sides of the elongate body define a print media path across which a printhead is located. The printhead is controlled by a printhead controller that, in use, responds to data placed on the bus from other modules of the system.
1. A printer having an elongate body with opposing print media entry and print media exit slots formed along said body to define a print media path therebetween;
a male connector and a female connector located at opposite ends of said body, each connector being configured to allow both physical and logical connection of the printer to external devices via connection with a corresponding male or female connector of said external devices;
a data bus disposed along the body and interconnecting the first and second connectors; and
a printhead arranged to print across the print media path and responsive to signals conveyed on the data bus.
2. A printer according to claim 1 including a printhead controller in communication with the printhead and with the data bus.
3. A printer according to claim 2 , including a print media sensor arranged to signal the presence of print media to the printhead controller.
4. A printer according to claim 3 , including a tab film arranged to provide signal connection between the sensor and the printhead controller.
5. A printer according to claim 1 , wherein the printhead comprises a microelectromechanical pagewidth inkjet printhead.
6. A printer according to claim 1 wherein the elongate body includes a chassis along which the data bus is disposed.
7. A printer according to claim 6 , including a base portion located over the data bus.
8. A printer according to claim 6 , wherein the printhead is mounted along the chassis.
9. A printer according to claim 8 , including opposed pinch and drive rollers arranged to transport print media along the print media path.
10. A printer according to claim 9 , including a capping mechanism driven by one of the drive rollers and arranged to cap the printhead.
11. A printer according to claim 6 , including an ink cartridge formed to receive one or more of the rollers.
12. A printer according to claim 11 , wherein the chassis is formed to receive opposing one or more of the rollers.
13. A printer according to claim 11 , wherein the chassis defines a number of channels disposed to convey ink from the ink cartridge to the printhead.
