Abstract

A variable speed transmission having a plurality of tilting balls and opposing input and output discs is illustrated and described that provides an infinite number of speed combinations over its transmission ratio range. The use of a planetary gear set allows minimum speeds to be in reverse and the unique geometry of the transmission allows all of the power paths to be coaxial, thereby reducing overall size and complexity of the transmission in comparison to transmissions achieving similar transmission ratio ranges.

Claims (38)

1. A force generator for a continuously variable transmission, the force generator comprising:

a first disc having a threaded bore;

a first set of ramps coupled to the first disc near an outer diameter of the first disc;

a plurality of bearings adapted to engage the first set of ramps;

a second set of ramps, the second set of ramps operably coupled to an outer diameter of a power transfer disc of the transmission and adapted to engage the bearings;

a rotatable screw adapted to engage the threaded bore;

a third set of ramps, the third set of ramps operably coupled to the screw; and

a fourth set of ramps, the fourth set of ramps operably coupled to the power transfer disc and adapted to engage the third set of ramps.

2. The force generator of claim 1 , wherein the first set of ramps is formed integrally with the first disc.

3. The force generator of claim 1 , wherein the second set of ramps is formed integrally with the power transfer disc.

4. The force generator of claim 1 , wherein the third set of ramps is formed integrally with the screw.

5. The force generator of claim 4 , wherein the fourth set of ramps is formed integrally with the screw.

6. The force generator of claim 1 , further comprising:

a thrust bearing contacting the screw; and

a linkage assembly adapted to apply a force to the thrust bearing tending to move the screw away from the power transfer disc in response to a shift in the transmission ratio.

7. The force generator of claim 6 , wherein in response to a shift in the transmission the linkage assembly varies the axial force applied to the thrust bearing as a function of the transmission ratio.

8. The force generator of claim 1 , wherein the first disc, power transfer disc, and screw are mounted coaxially along the same axis.

9. The force generator of claim 8 , further comprising a cage bearing for supporting the bearings.

10. The force generator of claim 6 , further comprising a lever that actuates the linkage assembly.

11. A method of generating axial force in a continuously variable transmission, the method comprising:

providing a first disc having a threaded bore;

coupling a first set of ramps to the first disc near an outer diameter of the first disc;

providing a plurality of bearings adapted to engage the first set of ramps;

coupling a second set of ramps to an outer diameter of a power transfer disc of the transmission, wherein the second set of ramps is adapted to engage the bearings;

providing a rotatable screw adapted to engage the threaded bore;

coupling a third set of ramps to the screw; and

coupling a fourth set of ramps to the power transfer disc, wherein the fourth set of ramps are adapted to engage the third set of ramps.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the first set of ramps is formed integrally with the first disc.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the second set of ramps is formed integrally with the power transfer disc.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the third set of ramps is formed integrally with the screw.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the fourth set of ramps is formed integrally with the screw.

16. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

providing a thrust bearing adapted to contact the screw; and

providing a linkage assembly adapted to apply a force to the thrust bearing, wherein said force tends to move the screw away from the power transfer disc in response to a shift in the transmission ratio.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein in response to a shift in the transmission the linkage assembly varies the axial force applied to the thrust bearing as a function of the transmission ratio.

18. The method of claim 11 , further comprising mounting coaxially the first disc, power transfer disc, and screw along the same axis.

19. The method of claim 18 , further comprising providing a cage bearing for supporting the bearings.

20. The method of claim 16 , further comprising providing a lever that actuates the linkage assembly.
