Abstract

A method and system for displaying identifiers for one or more series of recordable events is described. A system, such as the system of a digital video recorder, may receive a set of recordable events data, such as a listing of all television shows to be broadcast over a two-week period. The system analyzes the set of recordable events data for determining one or more sets of recordable events, where each set includes recordable events having the same title. The system analyzes each set of recordable events to determine sub-sets of recordable events based on relationships between the recordable events of each sub-set. The system displays an identifier for each sub-set of a given set of recordable events when the given set of recordable events is selected for display. A user may select to record a sub-set of recordable events by selecting the identifier that represents the sub-set.

Claims (41)

1. At a digital video recording system comprising a processor, a data storage device, and a user interface, a method for displaying identifiers for one or more series of recordable events, the method comprising:

the data storage device maintaining recordable events data that pertain to recordable events to occur during a given period of time;

the processor analyzing the recordable events data to determine a subset of the recordable events data, wherein the subset of recordable events data further pertain to recordable events having a common title;

the processor analyzing the subset of recordable events data to determine a first series of recordable events represented within the subset of recordable events data, wherein each recordable event of the first series of recordable events has at least one common descriptor other than the common title; and

the user interface displaying an identifier for the first series of recordable events when the subset of recordable events data is selected for display.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the digital video recording system further comprises a communication interface, the method further comprising:

receiving the recordable events data at the communication interface and storing the recordable events data in the data storage device.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising: selecting to record the first series of recordable events, wherein selecting to record the first series of recordable events includes selecting the identifier for the first series via the user interface.

4. A system for displaying identifiers for one or more series of recordable events, the system comprising:

a communication interface for receiving recordable events data that pertain to recordable events to occur during a given period of time;

a processor communicatively coupled to the communication interface, the processor for executing a set of program instructions;

data storage communicatively coupled to the processor, the data storage for storing the recordable events data and the program instructions, wherein execution of the program instructions cause the processor to (i) analyze the recordable events data to determine a subset of the recordable events data, wherein the subset of recordable events data further pertain to recordable events having a common title, and (ii) analyze the subset of recordable events data to determine a first series of recordable events represented within the subset of recordable events data, wherein each recordable event of the first series of recordable events has at least one common descriptor other than the common title; and

a user interface operable to display an identifier for the first series of recordable events when the subset of recordable events data is selected for display.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the user interface is operable to receive a user selection signal that indicates a given series of recordable events is to be recorded.

6. The system of claim 5 , further comprising:

means to record the given series of recordable events, wherein the given series of recordable events are recorded in the data storage.

7. The system of claim 5 ,

wherein the user interface includes means for receiving the user selection signal, and

wherein the means for receiving the user selection signal is selected from the group consisting of a wireless remote control receiver, a keypad, a touch screen, and a speech recognition system.

8. The system of claim 4 , wherein the recordable events data includes a list of recordable events, each recordable event being correlated with (i) a channel or frequency number, (ii) a day(s) of the week schedule, and (iii) a time-slot.

9. The system of claim 4 , wherein the communication interface comprises an interface selected from the group consisting of (i) a cable television interface, (ii) a radio frequency interface, (iii) a land-line telephone system telephone line, and (iv) an Internet connection.

10. The system of claim 4 , wherein the recordable events to occur during the given period of time comprise recordable events selected from the group consisting of (i) television shows, (ii) radio programs, and (iii) Internet transmissions.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

the processor analyzing the subset of recordable events data to determine a second series of the recordable events represented within the subset of recordable events data, wherein each recordable event of the second series of recordable events has at least one common descriptor other than the common title and the at least one common descriptor of the first series of recordable events.

12. The method of claim 1 ,

wherein the at least one common descriptor of the first series of recordable events includes a first time-slot, a first channel number, and a first day-of-the-week schedule, and

wherein the at least one common descriptor of the second series of recordable events includes a second time-slot, a second channel number, and a second day-of-the-week schedule.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the recordable events having the common title are television programs.

14. The method of claim of claim 2 , wherein receiving the set of recordable events data at the communication interface includes receiving recordable events data that includes data for recordable events that are deliverable via the Internet.

15. The method of claim 3 , further comprising:

the data storage recording the selected first series of recordable events,

wherein the first series of recordable events comprises recordable events having a common title, a common time-slot on a given day-of-the-week, and a common channel number.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein recording the first series of recordable events comprises recording recordable events having the common title that occur after the given period of time.

17. The system of claim 4 ,

wherein execution of the program instructions further causes the processor to analyze the subset of recordable events data to determine a second series of the recordable events represented within the subset of recordable events data, and

wherein each recordable event of the second series of recordable events has at least one common descriptor other than the common title and the at least one common descriptor of the first series of recordable events.

18. The system of claim 4 ,

wherein the user interface comprises a graphical user interface, and

wherein the user interface is operable to schedule recordation of all recordable events of the first series of recordable events.

19. The system of claim 18 , wherein the graphical user interface is operable to display a synopsis for each recordable event in the first series of recordable events.

20. The system of claim 5 , wherein the given series of recordable events is the first series of recordable events or the second series of recordable events.
