Abstract

The present invention is directed to processing calls to busy telecommunications lines. In one embodiment, the presence of a subscriber accessing a computer network over a first telephone line via a first computer terminal is detected, wherein the subscriber also has a first telephone station connected to the first line. When a caller calls the first line and the first line is busy, the call is forwarded to a second telephone line associated with a call manager system. The call manager system determines when the subscriber is no longer accessing the computer network. At least partly in response to determining that the subscriber is no longer accessing the computer network, the call manager system transmits a text message to the caller, the message including the subscriber's phone number. The caller can then call back the first line using the transmitted phone number.

Claims (58)

1. A method of processing a telecommunication call, the method comprising:

receiving at a call processing system a first call placed via a wireless station from a caller, the first call intended for a called party;

determining that the called party's telecommunications line is unavailable;

then determining that the telecommunications line associated with the called party is available; and

at least partly in response to determining that the telecommunications line associated with the called party is available, transmitting a text notification to the wireless station related to the availability of the called party telecommunications line,

wherein a second call is originated to the called party's telecommunications line that had been unavailable at least partly in response to an action taken by the caller.

2. A call processing system, comprising:

computer readable memory;

instructions stored in the computer readable memory configured to perform the actions of:

receiving at a call processing system a first call placed via a wireless station from a caller, the first call intended for a called party;

determining that the called party's telecommunications line is unavailable;

then determining that the telecommunications line associated with the called party is available;

at least partly in response to determining that the telecommunications line associated with the called party is available, transmitting a text notification to the wireless station related to the availability of the called party telecommunications line; and

at least partly in response to an action taken by the caller, originating a second call to the called party's telecommunications line that had been unavailable.

3. The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the first call is transmitted via a cellular phone system.

4. The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the text notification is a short message service (SMS) message.

5. The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the text notification is emailed to the wireless station.

6. The call processing system as defined in claim 1 , wherein the text notification is transmitted using a wireless application protocol.

7. The call processing system as defined in claim 1 , wherein the text notification is transmitted using instant messaging.

8. The method as defined in claim 1 , further comprising:

recording a voice message from the caller; and

transmitting the recorded voice message and the text notification to a computer system associated with the called party.

9. The method as defined in claim 1 , further comprising providing a user interface to the called party for inhibiting text notification transmission.

10. The method as defined in claim 1 , wherein the text notification includes a phone number.

11. The method as defined in claim 1 , the method further comprising determining that the first call originates wirelessly.

12. The method as defined in claim 1 , the method further comprising generating a data address associated with the wireless station.

13. The method as defined in claim 1 , the method further comprising generating a data address associated with the wireless station using caller ID data associated with the wireless station.

14. The method as defined in claim 1 , the method further comprising instructing the first caller to press a first key pad key if the caller wants to receive the text notification, and to press a second key pad if the caller does not want to receive the text notification.

15. The call processing system as defined in claim 2 , wherein the text notification is a short message service (SMS) message.

16. The call processing system as defined in claim 2 , wherein the text notification is an email.

17. The call processing system as defined in claim 2 , wherein the call processing system is further configured to transmit the text notification using a wireless application protocol.

18. The call processing system as defined in claim 2 , wherein the call processing system is further configured to transmit the text notification using instant messaging.

19. The call processing system as defined in claim 2 , wherein the call processing system is further configured to:

record a voice message from the caller; and

transmit the recorded voice message and the text notification to a computer system associated with the called party.

20. The call processing system as defined in claim 2 , wherein the call processing system is further configured to provide a user interface to the called party for inhibiting text notification transmission.

21. The call processing system as defined in claim 2 , wherein the text notification includes a phone number.

22. The call processing system as defined in claim 2 , wherein the call processing system is further configured to determine that the first call originates wirelessly.

23. The call processing system as defined in claim 2 , wherein the call processing system is further configured to generate a data address associated with the wireless station.

24. The call processing system as defined in claim 2 , wherein the call processing system is further configured to generate a data address associated with the wireless station using caller ID data associated with the wireless station.

25. The call processing system as defined in claim 2 , wherein the call processing system is further configured to instruct the first caller to press a first key pad key if the caller wants to receive the text notification, and to press a second key pad if the caller does not want to receive the text notification.

26. A computer system that executes a computer program stored in tangible computer readable medium to:

receive signaling information associated with a first call from a caller placed by the caller using a telephonic device, the first call intended for a called party;

determine whether the called party's telecommunications line is unavailable;

when the called party's telecommunications line is determined to be unavailable, determine if the unavailable party's telecommunications line becomes available; and

at least partly in response to the determination that the telecommunications line associated with the called party has become available, transmit a text notification to the telephonic device related to the availability of the called party telecommunications line, wherein the text notification enables, at least in part, the caller to initiate a second call to the called party's telecommunications line that had been unavailable.

27. The computer system as defined in claim 26 , wherein the text notification is a short message service (SMS) message.

28. The computer system as defined in claim 26 , wherein the text notification is an email.

29. The computer system as defined in claim 26 , wherein the text notification is provided via a wireless application protocol.

30. The computer system as defined in claim 26 , wherein the computer system is further configured to transmit the text notification using instant messaging.

31. The computer system as defined in claim 26 , wherein the computer system is further configured to:

record a voice message from the caller; and

transmit the recorded voice message and the text notification to a computer system associated with the called party.

32. The computer system as defined in claim 26 , wherein the computer system is further configured to provide a text notification inhibition user interface to the called party.

33. The computer system as defined in claim 26 , wherein the computer system is further configured to determine whether the first call originates wirelessly.

34. The computer system as defined in claim 26 , wherein the computer system is further configured to generate a data address associated with caller telecommunication device.

35. The computer system as defined in claim 26 , wherein the computer system is further configured to generate a data address, including a carrier identifier, associated with the caller telecommunication device using signaling information associated with the first call.

36. The computer system as defined in claim 26 , wherein the computer system is further configured to instruct the first caller to press a first key pad key if the caller wants to receive the text notification, and to press a second key pad if the caller does not want to receive the text notification.
