Abstract

An intervertebral spacer device includes first and second plates having plate surfaces, the first and second plates being spaced from one another with inner ones of the plate surfaces opposing one another and external ones of the plate surfaces facing in opposite directions. The spacer device includes at least one domed arch strip spring disposed between the inner surfaces of the first and second plate members for counteracting compressive loads applied to the external surfaces of the first and second plates. The at least one domed arch strip spring has lateral ends that are coupled with the first plate and a curvate central portion that is maintained adjacent the inner surface of the second plate.

Claims (25)

1. An intervertebral spacer device comprising:

first and second plates having plate surfaces, said first and second plates being spaced from one another with inner ones of said plate surfaces opposing one another and external ones of said plate surfaces facing in opposite directions;

at least one domed arch strip spring disposed between the inner surfaces of said first and second plates for counteracting compressive loads applied to the external surfaces of said first and second plates;

said at least one domed arch strip spring having lateral ends that are coupled with the inner surface of said first plate and a curvate central portion that is maintained adjacent the inner surface of said second plate, wherein the lateral ends of said at least one domed arch strip spring are secured to said first plate; and

a post structure projecting from the inner surface of said second plate, said post structure being coupled with the curvate central portion of said at least one domed arch strip spring.

2. The device as claimed in claim 1 , wherein said post structure includes a ball-shaped head and the curvate central portion of said at least one domed arch strip spring includes a curvate volume for receiving and holding therein said ball-shaped head.

3. The device as claimed in claim 2 , wherein ball-shaped head includes a threaded bore adapted to receive a set screw therein, and wherein said ball-shaped head is substantially compressible prior to receiving said set screw and substantially non-compressible after receiving said set screw.

4. The device as claimed in claim 1 , wherein at least one of said external surfaces of said first and second plates comprises a porous coating.

5. The device as claimed in claim 4 , wherein said porous coating includes a wire mesh.

6. The device as claimed in claim 5 , wherein said wire mesh is deflectable.

7. The device as claimed in claim 5 , wherein said wire mesh has an at least partially convex shape.

8. The device as claimed in claim 4 , wherein said porous coating has an at least partially convex shape.

9. The device as claimed in claim 1 , wherein said at least one domed arch strip spring has a peak having a socket.

10. The device as claimed in claim 1 , wherein each of the lateral ends of said at least one domed arch strip spring has an opening.

11. The device as claimed in claim 10 , wherein the openings at the lateral ends are threaded openings, said device further comprising set screws insertible into the threaded openings at the lateral ends.

12. An intervertebral spacer device comprising:

first and second plates having plate surfaces, said first and second plates being spaced from one another with inner ones of said plate surfaces opposing one another and external ones of said plate surfaces facing in opposite directions;

at least one domed arch strip spring disposed between the inner surfaces of said first and second plates for counteracting compressive loads applied to the external surfaces of said first and second plates;

said at least one domed arch strip spring having lateral ends that are coupled with the inner surface of said first plate and a curvate central portion that is maintained adjacent the inner surface of said second plate, wherein the lateral ends of said at least one domed arch strip spring are secured to said first plate, wherein said at least one domed arch strip spring comprises a metal strip.

13. An intervertebral spacer device comprising:

first and second plates having plate surfaces, said first and second plates being spaced from one another with inner ones of said plate surfaces opposing one another and external ones of said plate surfaces facing in opposite directions;

at least one domed arch strip spring disposed between the inner surfaces of said first and second plates for counteracting compressive loads applied to the external surfaces of said first and second plates;

said at least one domed arch strip spring having lateral ends that are coupled with the inner surface of said first plate and a curvate central portion that is maintained adjacent the inner surface of said second plate, wherein the lateral ends of said at least one domed arch strip spring are secured to said first plate, wherein said at least one domed arch strip spring has a central opening.

14. The device as claimed in claim 13 , wherein the central opening has a curvate volume.

15. The device as claimed in claim 14 , further comprising a post attached to said second plate and received in the curvate volume of the central opening of said at least one domed arch strip spring.
