Abstract

A half-toner compositor to composite image plane data, for use in an ink drop print head, the half-toner compositor comprising at least one dot merger 58 receiving data from more than one buffer 42 , and a color mask register 48 holding masking bits in number equal to the number of image planes, wherein input data to the at least one dot merger 58 is combined with the masking bits to form an output data corresponding to a type of ink in the print head.

Claims (16)

1. A half-toner compositor to composite image plane data, for use in an ink jet print head, the half-toner compositor comprising:

at least one dot merger receiving data from more than one buffer; and,

a color mask register holding masking bits in number equal to the number of image planes,

wherein input data to the at least one dot merger is combined with the masking bits to form an output data corresponding to a type of ink in the print head.

2. The half-toner compositor of claim 1 , wherein the more than one buffer comprises at least one contone buffer.

3. The half-toner compositor of claim 2 , wherein the at least one comparator compares data received from the at least one contone buffer to the data received from the dither-matrix access unit, generating output data.

4. The half-toner compositor of claim 3 , wherein the output data from the at least one comparator forms the input data to the dot merger.

5. The half-toner compositor of claim 1 , wherein the more than one buffer comprises at least one bi-level buffer.

6. The half-toner compositor of claim 5 , wherein the bi-level buffer is a FIFO buffer.

7. The half-toner compositor of claim 1 , wherein the half-toner compositor further comprises a scale unit which receives buffer output data from the one of the more than one buffers.

8. The half-toner compositor of claim 7 , wherein the scale unit facilitates horizontal and vertical scaling of the buffer output data.

9. The half-toner compositor of claim 7 , wherein the scale unit is adapted to receive control data from a margin unit.

10. The half-toner compositor of claim 1 , wherein the half-toner compositor further comprises a dither-matrix access unit.

11. The half-toner compositor of claim 10 , wherein the dither-matrix access unit provides data to at least one comparator.

12. The half-toner compositor of claim 11 , wherein the comparator is an eight-bit comparator.

13. The half-toner compositor of claim 1 , wherein the input data to the at least one dot merger is ANDed with respective masking bits and the resultant data ORed together by the at least one dot merger.
