Abstract

The invention relates to a method for purifying water by dissolving one or more soluble metal salts in the water to provide corresponding metal ions, by dissolving hypohalite into the water, and by regulating the residence time, and thus hypohalite concentration in the device using a venturi nozzle disposed between the metal generator and the hypohalite generator.

Claims (34)

1. A water purifying system, comprising:

(a) an inlet for entry of water into the system;

(b) a metal-generating media adapted to contact at least a portion of the water in the system and provide concentrations of one or more metals to the water;

(c) a halogen-generating media adapted to contact at least a portion of the water in the system and provide concentrations of one or more halogens to at least a portion of the water, wherein the metal-generating media and the halogen-generating media are in fluid communication with one another,

(d) a flow path between (b) and (c) that is adapted to:

(1) carry at least a portion of the water in the system;

(2) create a pressure drop; and

(3) draw water from the halogen-generating media into the flow path; and

(e) an exit outlet in fluid communication with the flow path, the exit outlet adapted to allow water to exit the water purifying system, whereby at least a portion of the water exiting the system is purified.

2. The water purifying system of claim 1 , wherein the metal-generating media and the halogen-generating media are contained in the same housing unit.

3. A water purifying process using the water purifying system of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the water entering the system is allowed to:

(1) enter the metal-generating media and flow into the halogen-generating media;

(2) by-pass the metal-generating media and flow into the halogen-generating media;

(3) by-pass both the metal-generating media and the halogen-generating media and flow into the flow path;

(4) enter the metal-generating media and flow into the flow path; or

(5) some combination thereof.

4. The water purifying process of claim 3 , wherein at least a portion of the water entering the system flows through the metal-generating media, flows through the halogen-generating media, and is drawn into the flow path to exit the system.

5. The water purifying process of claim 3 , wherein at least a portion of the water entering the system by-passes the metal-generating media, flows into the halogen-generating media, and is drawn into the flow path to exit the system.

6. The water purifying process of claim 3 , wherein at least a portion of the water entering the system by-passes both the metal-generating media and the halogen-generating media and flows through the flow path and moves water from the halogen-generating media into the flow path to exit the system.

7. The water purifying process of claim 3 , wherein at least a portion of the water entering the system flows through metal-generating media, flows into the flow path, and moves water from the halogen-generating media into the flow path to exit the system.

8. A method for purifying water comprising passing the water through the system of claim 1 .

9. The water purifying system of claim 1 , wherein:

(1) the metal-generating media comprises a water path flow that directs a portion of the water that enters through the inlet through the system;

(2) the halogen-generating media comprises a water path flow that directs a portion of the water that enters through the inlet through the system; and

(3) the flow path comprises a region where water drawn from the halogen-generating media into the system is combined with other water flowing in the system.

10. The water purifying system of claim 1 , wherein the halogen-generating media is in fluid communication with the flow path.

11. The water purifying system of claim 1 , wherein the system comprises one or more control valves to regulate the flow of water though the system.

12. The water purifying system of claim 1 , wherein the halogen-generating media comprises hypochlorite salt tablets.

13. The water purifying system of claim 1 , wherein the system is adapted to remove water from a body of water, pass the water through the system to treat the water, and return the treated water to the body of water.

14. A water purifying process adapted to purify water by:

(a) directing at least a portion of the water into a metal generator;

(b) directing at least a portion of the water into a halogen generator;

(c) directing at least a portion of the water into a flow path adapted to create a pressure drop to move water from (a) or (b) into the flow path; and

(d) directing at least a portion of the water out of the flow path.
