Abstract

Improved biological material imaging systems and related methods are provided by using an imaging system for imaging biological materials, the imaging system comprising a sensor having one or more receptors, and an image transfer medium to scale the one or more receptors to an object field of view.

Claims (32)

1. A biological material imaging system, comprising:

an imaging system for imaging a portion of a biological material sample, the imaging system comprising:

a sensor having one or more receptors, the one or more receptors having a receptor size parameter; and

an image transfer medium having a diffraction limited spot size in an object field of view, the image transfer medium operative to scale the receptor size parameter in the object field of view to about the diffraction limited spot size in the object field of view;

a memory comprising stored biological material image data; and

a processor for comparing image data generated by the imaging system to stored biological material image data, the processor coupled to the memory.

2. The biological material imaging system of claim 1 , the image transfer medium providing a k-space filter that correlates a pitch associated with the one or more receptors to a diffraction-limited spot within the object field of view, the pitch being unit-mapped to about the size of the diffraction-limited spot within the object field of view.

3. The biological material imaging system of claim 1 , the image data generated by the imaging system being sent via data packets to a remotely located processor.

4. The biological material imaging system of claim 1 , the image transfer medium comprising a multiple lens configuration, the multiple lens configuration comprising a first lens positioned toward the object field of view and a second lens positioned toward the sensor, the first lens sized to have a focal length smaller than the second lens to provide an apparent reduction of the one or more receptors within the object field of view.

5. The biological material imaging system of claim 1 comprising a cancer detection system, the processor compares the image data generated by the imaging system to stored biological material image data and determines if biological material sample is cancerous or noncancerous.

6. The biological material imaging system of claim 1 , the biological material sample has an unknown identity, and the processor determines the identity of the biological material sample.

7. The biological material imaging system of claim 1 , the biological material sample comprising anthrax.

8. The biological material imaging system of claim 1 , the processor determines the presence of diseased cells by comparing image data generated by the imaging system to stored biological material image data.

9. A biological material imaging system, comprising:

an imaging system for imaging a portion of a biological material sample, the imaging system comprising:

a sensor comprising pixels, the pixels having a pixel size parameter; and

an image transfer medium having a diffraction limited spot size in an object field of view, the image transfer medium operative to scale the pixel size parameter in the object field of view to about the diffraction limited spot size in the object field of view, the image transfer medium comprising a multiple lens configuration, the multiple lens configuration comprising a first lens positioned toward the object field of view and a second lens positioned toward the sensor, the first lens sized to have a focal length smaller than the second lens to provide an apparent reduction of the one or more receptors within the object field of view;

a memory comprising stored biological material image data; and

a processor for comparing image data generated by the imaging system to stored biological material image data, the processor coupled to the memory.

10. The biological material imaging system of claim 9 having a substantially unitary Modulation Transfer Function.

11. The biological material imaging system of claim 9 , the biological material sample comprising at least one selected from the group consisting of human cells, non-human animal cells, cancerous cells, plant cells, and synthetic cells.

12. A method of processing a biological material sample, comprising:

imaging at least a portion of a biological material sample using an imaging system, the imaging system comprising a sensor comprising receptors having a receptor size parameter and an image transfer medium having a diffraction limited spot size in an object field of view, the image transfer medium operative to scale the receptor size parameter in the object field of view to about the diffraction limited spot size in the object field of view; and

comparing image data of the biological material sample to stored biological material image data.

13. The method of claim 12 the stored biological material image data comprises cancerous cell data, and the method determines if the biological material sample is cancerous.

14. The method of claim 12 , the biological material sample being of unknown identity, the method determines an identity of the biological material sample.

15. The method of claim 12 , the stored biological material image data comprises diseased cell data, and the method determines if the biological material sample has a disease.

16. The method of claim 12 , the biological material sample comprising blood and the stored biological material image data comprises blood cell data.

17. The method of claim 12 , the biological material sample comprising at least one of human cells and bacteria.

18. The method of claim 12 , the biological material sample comprising at least one selected from the group consisting of human cells, non-human animal cells, plant cells, and synthetic cells.

19. The method of claim 12 , wherein imaging the biological material sample is performed remotely from comparing image data of the biological material sample to the stored biological material image data.

20. The method of claim 12 , the image transfer medium comprising a multiple lens configuration, the multiple lens configuration comprising a first lens positioned toward the object field of view and a second lens positioned toward the sensor, the first lens sized to have a focal length smaller than the second lens to provide an apparent reduction of the receptors within the object field of view.
