Abstract

The present invention discloses a method and apparatus for separating particles and dissolved matter from a fluid stream. Specifically, the present invention includes a first pressure source which transports untreated fluid into a separator annulus with a filter element disposed therein. The untreated fluid is placed under appropriate pressure sufficient to produce turbulent flow, increased particle kinetics and/or cavitation physics allowing the desired fluid to penetrate and pass into and through the filter media. The filtered fluid is then transported to a collection tank. The contaminant particulate matter retained by the filter media may be removed by the instantenous reverse pressurization of the separator annulus by a second pressure source thereby removing the contaminant particles away from contact with the filter media, and which may then be transported to a waste collection tank or a concentrator for further treatment.

Claims (29)

1. A method of separating a contaminant from a fluid stream comprising:

pumping a fluid having a contaminant into the fluid ring of at least one separator and creating a pressure differential across a flux cartridge such that a first pressure in said fluid ring is greater than a second pressure inside said flux cartridge, thereby resulting in the capture of a substantial portion of the contaminant by the flux cartridge;

inducing a cavitation reaction within the fluid ring;

transporting a substantial portion of the filtered fluid passing through the flux cartridge through a first outlet into a collection reservoir;

reversing the flow of a portion of the filtered fluid through the flux cartridge to dislodge a substantial portion of the captured contaminant retained by the flux cartridge with a pneumatic pump pressure source providing a greater fluid pressure than said first pressure; and,

transporting a substantial portion of the backwash fluid and captured contaminant to a concentrator.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

desiccating the fluid and captured contaminant in the concentrator with pressurized purge air so that a substantial part of the fluid is removed.

3. The method of claim 2 further comprising:

removing a substantial portion of the substantially dry contaminant from the concentrator.

4. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

removing a substantial portion of the contaminant from the concentrator.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein a substantial portion of the contaminant is removed from the concentrator by a purge air source.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein a plurality of separators are operated in at least one of a parallel or series configuration.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein a plurality of concentrators are operated in at least one of a parallel or series configuration.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the pressure delivered by the pump provides kinetic energy to the influent contaminant fluid to promote turbulent flow conditions within the fluid ring of the separator.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein a pulse of fluid is created within the fluid ring sufficient to produce turbulent fluid flow conditions within the fluid ring of the separator.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein the pressure differential across the separator flux cartridge is sufficient to produce cavitation.

11. The method of claim 1 wherein the pressure differential across the flux cartridge is sufficient to produce a membrane emulation effect.

12. A method of separating a contaminant from a fluid stream comprising:

pumping with a first pressure a fluid having a contaminant into the fluid ring of at least one separator and creating a pressure differential across a flux cartridge thereby capturing a substantial portion of the contaminant on the flux cartridge;

inducing a cavitation reaction within the fluid ring:

transporting a substantial portion of the filtered fluid through a first outlet into a collection reservoir; and,

reversing the flow of a portion of the filtered fluid through the flux cartridge to dislodge a substantial portion of the captured contaminant retained by the flux cartridge with a pneumatic pump pressure source providing a greater fluid pressure than said first pressure; and,

transporting a substantial portion of the fluid and captured contaminant to a concentrator, wherein the flow of fluid into the separator is controlled by at least one poppet valve.

13. A method of separating a contaminant from a fluid stream comprising:

pumping a fluid having a contaminant into the fluid ring of at least one separator and creating a pressure differential across a flux cartridge thereby capturing a substantial portion of the contaminant on the flux cartridge;

transporting a substantial portion of the filtered fluid through a first outlet into a collection reservoir; and

pneumatically reversing the flow of the filtered fluid through the flux cartridge to dislodge a substantial portion of the captured contaminant with by pumping and transporting a substantial portion of the fluid and captured contaminant to a concentrator, wherein the flow of fluid into the concentrator is controlled by at least one poppet valve.
