Abstract

A spacecraft including control vanes for controlling the pointing direction of the spacecraft by providing a variable absorptive, reflective, emissive and/or transmissive properties. The control vanes provide a torque on the spacecraft to maintain the spacecraft pointing towards the sun. The control vanes can include at least one x b -axis control vane and at least one y b -axis control vane where the x b axis control vane provides x b -axis control torque on the spacecraft rotated about the x b -axis, and the y b -axis control vane provides y b -axis control torque on the spacecraft when rotated about the y b -axis.

Claims (26)

1. A spacecraft comprising:

a spacecraft bus; and

at least one control vane positioned relative to the spacecraft bus, said control vane including a control surface having at least one of a variable absorptive, transmissive, reflective and emissive characteristic so that the center of solar pressure on the spacecraft changes as the sun incidence angle on the thermal control surface changes.

2. The spacecraft according to claim 1 wherein the control surface includes a plurality of pie shaped sections, and wherein each pie-shaped section includes the same variable absorptive, transmissive, reflective and emissive characteristic from an outer perimeter of the control surface to a center of the control surface.

3. The spacecraft according to claim 1 wherein the control surface includes an embossed film having ridges with an elongated triangular shaped cross-section, and wherein the orientation of the control surface relative to the incident solar radiation determines the absorptive, transmissive, reflective and emissive characteristics of the surface.

4. The spacecraft according to claim 3 wherein the embossed film is symmetrical about a center line of the control surface so that portions of the control surface on opposite sides of the center line face each other.

5. The spacecraft according to claim 1 wherein the control surface is positioned on the at least one control vane in such a manner that solar radiation pressure produces torques that maintain the spacecraft in a stable pointing orientation towards the sun.

6. The spacecraft according to claim 1 further comprising at least one solar array, said at least one control vane being connected to the at least one solar array.

7. The spacecraft according to claim 1 wherein the at least one control vane is a plurality of control vanes including at least one x b -axis control vane and at least one y b -axis control vane, where the x b -axis control vane provides x b -axis control torque on the spacecraft when it is rotated about the x b -axis direction, and the y b -axis control vane provides y b -axis control torque on the spacecraft when it is rotated about the y b -axis.

8. The spacecraft according to claim 1 wherein the at least one control vane includes a first control surface on one side of a substrate and a second control surface on an opposite side of the substrate.

9. The spacecraft according to claim 8 wherein the first control surface and the second control surface each include segments having a long side and a short side, wherein the long side of each segment includes a reflective material and the short side of each segment includes an absorptive material.

10. The spacecraft according to claim 8 wherein the first control surface is an embossed film positioned on one side of the substrate and the second control surface is an embossed film positioned on an opposite side of the substrate where the orientation of the embossed films are opposite to each other.

11. The spacecraft according to claim 10 wherein the embossed films are formed on an insulating substrate.

12. A spacecraft comprising:

a bus; and

a plurality of control vanes that maintain the spacecraft pointing towards the sun, each of the control vanes including a first outer layer on one side of the control vane and a second outer layer on an opposite side of the control vane, where tile outer layers have a variable absorptive, reflective and emissive characteristic so that the center of solar pressure on the spacecraft changes as the sun incidence angle on the control vanes changes.

13. The spacecraft according to claim 12 further comprising at least one solar array, said plurality of control vanes being connected to the at least one solar array.

14. The spacecraft according to claim 12 wherein the plurality of control vanes include at least one x b -axis control vane and at least one Y b -axis control vane where the x b -axis control vane provides x b -axis control torque on the spacecraft when rotated about the x b -axis, and the y b -axis control vane provides yb-axis control torque on the spacecraft when rotated about y b -axis.

15. The spacecraft according to claim 12 wherein the first and second outer layers are embossed films positioned on opposite sides of a substrate and wherein the orientation of the embossed films are opposite to each other.

16. The spacecraft according to claim 15 wherein the embossed films include elongated triangular sections where a short side of each triangular section is absorptive and a long side of each triangular section is reflective so that the orientation of the control vane relative to the incident solar radiation determines an “effective” absorptive, reflective and emissive properties of the control vane.

17. A spacecraft comprising:

a bus; and

a plurality of control vanes that maintain the spacecraft pointing towards the sun, each of the control vanes including a first outer layer on one side of the control vane and a second outer layer on an opposite side of the control vane, where the outer layers have a variable, absorptive, reflective and emissive characteristic so that the center of solar pressure on the spacecraft changes as the sun incidence angle on the control vanes changes, wherein the plurality of control vanes include at least one x b -axis control vane and at least one Y b -axis control vane where the x b -axis control vane provides x b -axis control torque on the spacecraft when rotated about the x b -axis, and the x b -axis control vane provides y b -axis control torque on the spacecraft when rotated about the y b axis , and wherein the first and second outer layers are embossed films positioned on opposite sides of a substrate and wherein the orientation of the embossed films are opposite to each other.

18. The spacecraft according to claim 17 wherein the embossed films include elongated triangular sections where a short side of each triangular section is absorptive and a long side of each triangular section is reflective so that the orientation of the control vane relative to the incident solar radiation determines an “effective” absorptive, reflective and emissive properties of the control vane.

19. The spacecraft according to claim 17 further comprising at least one solar array, said plurality of control vanes being connected to the at least one solar array.

20. The spacecraft according to claim 17 wherein the embossed films are formed on an Insulating substrate.
