Abstract

A weight measurement system is disclosed for measuring the weight of an occupant in a vehicle seat. In a preferred embodiment, a sensor is positioned at the rear portion of the vehicle seat and a load transfer link is used to transfer the weight from the front portion of the vehicle seat to the rear portion, to be measured by the sensor. The transfer link is a selectively compliant beam having a first rigid section and a second rigid section connected to each other via a flexible area. The first and second rigid sections preferably include wing portions for increasing the rigidity of the sections. The flexible area is more compliant than the rigid sections. The load transfer link is configured to transition a load placed on the front portion of the link to the rear portion. In a more preferred embodiment of the invention, the load transfer link is made of a high strength, low alloy steel.

Claims (14)

1. A transfer link comprising:

a compliant beam having a spine, a first rigid section, a second rigid section and a flexible area between the first and second sections wherein the first rigid section includes a first wing portion depending downwardly from the spine and wherein the second rigid section includes a second wing portion depending downwardly from the spine; and

a first end and a second end, wherein the transfer link is configured to transfer a load placed on the first end to the second end, wherein the length of the first and second rigid sections are configured such that the load transferred to the second end is about the same as the load placed on the first end.

2. The transfer link of claim 1 further comprising high strength low alloy steel.

3. The transfer link of claim 1 wherein the first and second rigid sections include an opening defined therethrough for connecting the transfer link to an object.

4. The transfer link of claim 3 wherein the first and second ends each include an opening defined therethrough for connecting the transfer link to a seat.

5. The transfer link of claim 1 wherein the first and second wing portions each slope toward the flexible area.

6. A transfer link comprising:

a compliant high strength low alloy steel beam having a first rigid section, a second rigid section and flexible area between the first and second sections;

a first end and a second end, wherein the transfer link is configured to transfer a load placed on the first end to the second end;

a spine;

a first wing portion extending downwardly from the spine at the first rigid section; and

a second wing portion extending downwardly from the spine at the second rigid section,

wherein the length of the first and second rigid sections are configured such that the load transferred to the second end is about the same as the load placed on the first end.
