Abstract

Phosphor compositions including those having the formulas A 2-x Eu x W 1-y Mo y O 6 , where A is selected from Y, Gd, Lu, La, and combinations thereof; and where 0.5≦x≦1.0, 0.01≦y≦1.0; M m O n X, wherein M is selected from the group of Sc, Y, a lanthanide, an alkali earth metal and mixtures thereof; X is a halogen; 1≦m≦3; and 1≦n≦4, and wherein the lanthanide doping level can range from 0.1 to 40% spectral weight; and Eu 3+ activated phosphate or borate phosphors. Also disclosed are light emitting devices including a light source and at least one of the above phosphor compositions.

Claims (24)

1. A lighting apparatus for emitting white light comprising:

a semiconductor light source; and

a phosphor composition radiationally coupled to the light source, the phosphor composition comprising a phosphor composition including at least one of:

(A) A 2-x Eu x W 1-y Mo y O 6 , where A is selected from Y, Gd, Lu, La, and combinations thereof; and where 0.5≦x≦1.0, 0.01≦y≦1.0;

(B) M m O n X, wherein M is selected from the group consisting of Sc, Y, La, a lanthanide, an alkali earth metal and mixtures thereof; X is a halogen; 1≦m≦3; and 1≦n≦4, and having a lanthanide doping level can range from 0.001% to 40% by weight; or

(C) an Eu 3+ activated a phosphate or borate phosphor selected from the group consisting of (Y,Gd,Lu,La)PO 4 ; (Y,Gd,Lu,La)P 3 O 9 ; (Y,Gd,Lu,La)P 5 O 14 ; (Sr,Ba,Ca) 3 (Lu,Gd,Y,La)P 3 O 12 ; Ca 1.5 Ba 1.5 (La,Y,Gd,Lu)P 3 O 12 ; (Y,La,Lu,Gd)BO 3 ; (Gd,Y,Lu,La)B 3 O 6 ; (La,Gd,Lu,Y)(Al,Ga) 3 B 4O 12 ; (Y,Gd,Lu,La)MgB 5 O 10 ; (Sr,Ca,Ba)(Lu,Gd,Y,La)B 7 O 13 ; Ca 0.5 Ba 0.5 LaB 7 O 13 ; and blends thereof.

2. The lighting apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the light source is a semiconductor light emitting diode (LED) emitting radiation having a wavelength in the range of from about 370 to about 405 nm.

3. The lighting apparatus of claim 2 , wherein the LED comprises a nitride compound semiconductor represented by the formula In i Ga j Al k N, where 0≦i; 0≦j, 0≦K, and i+j+k=1.

4. The lighting apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the light source is an organic emissive structure.

5. The lighting apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the phosphor composition is coated on the surface of the light source.

6. The lighting apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising an encapsulant surrounding the light source and the phosphor composition.

7. The lighting apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the phosphor composition is dispersed in an encapsulant.

8. The lighting apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a reflector cup.

9. The lighting apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said phosphor composition further comprises one or more additional phosphor.

The lighting apparatus of claim 9 , wherein said one or more additional phosphors are selected from the group consisting of (Ba,Sr,Ca) 5 (PO 4 ) 3 (Cl,F,Br,OH):Eu 2+ ,Mn 2+ ,Sb 3+ ; (Ba,Sr,Ca)BPO 5 :Eu 2+ ,Mn 2+ ; (Sr,Ca) 10 (PO 4 ) 6 *nB 2 O 3 :Eu 2+ ; 2SrO*0.84P 2 O 5 *0.16B 2 O 3 :Eu 2+ ; (Mg,Ca,Sr,Ba,Zn) 3 B 2 O 6 :Eu 2+ ; Sr 2 Si 3 O 8* 2SrCl 2 :Eu 2+ ; Ba 3 MgSi 2 O 8 : Eu 2+ ; Sr 4 Al 14 O 25 :Eu 2+ ; BaAl 8 O 13 :Eu 2+ ; (Ba,Sr,Ca)MgAl 10 O 17 :Eu 2+ ,Mn 2+ ; (Ba,Sr,Ca)Al 2 O 4 :Eu 2+ ; (Y,Gd,Lu,Sc,La)BO 3 :Ce 3+ ,Tb 3+ ; Ca 8 Mg(SiO 4 ) 4 Cl 2 :Eu 2+ ,Mn 2+ ; (Ba,Sr,Ca) 2 SiO 4 :Eu 2+ ; (Ba,Sr,Ca) 2 (Mg,Zn)Si 2 O 7 : Eu 2+ ; (Sr,Ca,Ba)(Al,Ga,In) 2 S 4:Eu 2+ ; (Y,Gd,Tb,La,Sm,Pr,Lu) 3 (Al,Ga) 5 O 12 :Ce 3+ ; (Ca,Sr) 8 (Mg,Zn)(SiO 4 ) 4 Cl 2:Eu 2+ , Mn 2+ ; Na 2 Gd 2 B 2 O 7 :Ce 3+ ,Tb 3+ ;(Ba,Sr) 2 (Ca,Mg,Zn)B 2 O 6 : K,Ce,Tb;(Gd,Y,Lu,La) 2 O 3 :Eu 3+ ,Bi 3+ ; (Gd,Y,Lu.La) 2 O 2 S:Eu 3+ ,Bi 3+ ; (Gd,Y,Lu.La)VO 4 :Eu 3+ ,Bi 3+ ; (Ca,Sr)S:Eu 2+ ; SrY 2 S 4 :Eu 2+ ; CaLa 2 S 4 :Ce 3+ ; (Y,Lu) 2 WO 6 :Eu 3+ ,Mo 6+ ; (Mg,Ca,Sr,Ba,Zn) v (Si,Ge) y N (2v/3+4y/3) :Eu 2+ ; and (Mg,Ca,Sr,Ba,Zn) v (Si,Ge) Y O Z N (2v/3+4y/3+2z/3) :Eu 2+ .

An LCD backlight including a phosphor selected from the group consisting of (Y,Gd,Lu,La)PO 4 :Eu; (Y,Gd,Lu,La)P 3 O 9 :Eu; (Y,Gd,Lu,La)P 5 O 14 :Eu; (Sr,Ba,Ca)3(Lu,Gd,Y,La)P 3 O 12 :Eu; Ca 1.5 Ba 1.5 (La,y,Gd,Lu)P 3O 12 :Eu; (Y,La,Lu,Gd)BO 3 :Eu; (Gd,Y,LuLa)B 3 O 6 :Eu; (La,Gd,Lu,Y)(Al,Ga) 3 B 4 O 12 :Eu; (Y,Gd,Lu,La)MgB 5 O 10 :Eu; (Sr,Ca,Ba)(Lu,Gd,Y,La)B 7 O 13 :Eu; Ca 0.5 Ba 0.5 LaB 7 O 13 :Eu; M m O n X, wherein M is selected from the group consisting of Sc, Y, a lanthanide, an alkali earth metal and mixtures thereof; X is a halogen; 1≦m≦3; and 1≦n≦4, and wherein the lanthanide doping level can range from 0.001 to 40% by weight; and A 2-x Eu x W 1-y Mo y O 6 , where A is selected from Y,Gd,Lu,La, and combinations thereof; and where 0.5≦x≦1.0, 0.01≦y≦1.0; and blends thereof.

The LCD backlight according to claim 11 , wherein said phosphor comprises at least one of La 0.95 Eu 0.05 PO 4 ; Gd 0.8 Eu 0.2 PO 4 ; Gd 0.8 Eu 0.2 P 3 O 9 ; Gd 0.8 Eu 0.2 P 5 O 14 ; Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 Gd 0.8 Eu 0.2 PO 4 ; Sr 3 (PO 4 ) 2 Gd 0.8 Eu 0.2 PO 4 ; Ca 1.5 Ba 1.5 (PO 4 ) 2 Gd 0.8 Eu 0.2 PO 4 ; Ba 3 (PO 4 ) 2 Gd 0.8 Eu 0.2 PO 4 ; Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 Y 0.95 Eu 0.05 PO 4 ; La 0.95 Eu 0.05 BO 3 ; Gd 0.8 Eu 0.2 BO 3 ; Y 0.95 Eu 0.05 Al 3 B 4 O 12 ; Gd 0.95 Eu 0.05 Al 3 B 4 O 12 ; Gd 0.8 Eu 0.2 Al 3 B 4 O 12 ; CaGd 0.8 Eu 0.2 B 7 O 13 ; Ca 0.5 Ba 0.5 La 0.95 Eu 0.05 B 7 O 13 ; Ca 0.5 Ba 0.5 Gd 0.8 Eu 0.2 B 7 O 13 ; BaGd 0.8 Eu 0.2 B 7 O 13 ; and combinations thereof.

13. A lighting apparatus for emitting white light comprising:

a semiconductor light source; and

a phosphor composition radiationally coupled to the light source, the phosphor composition comprising a phosphor composition including at least one of:

(A) A 2-x Eu x W 1-y Mo y O 6 , where A is selected from Y, Gd, Lu, La, and combinations thereof; and where 0.5≦x≦1.0, 0.01≦y≦1.0; and

(B) M m O n X, wherein M is selected from the group consisting of Sc, Y, La, a lanthanide, an alkali earth metal and mixtures thereof; X is a halogen; 1≦m≦3; and 1≦n≦4, and having a lanthanide doping level can range from 0.001% to 40% by weight.

14. The lighting apparatus of claim 13 , wherein said phosphor composition comprises Y 1.85 Eu 0.15 W 0.98 Mo 0.02 O 6 .

15. The lighting apparatus of claim 13 , wherein said phosphor composition comprises (La 0.985 Sm 0.01 Ce 0.005 )OBr.
