Abstract

Aluminum alloy products, such as plate, forgings and extrusions, suitable for use in making aerospace structural components like integral wing spars, ribs and webs, comprises about: 6 to 10 wt. % Zn; 1.2 to 1.9 wt. % Mg; 1.2 to 2.2 wt. % Cu, with Mg≦(Cu+0.3); and 0.05 to 0.4 wt. % Zr, the balance Al, incidental elements and impurities. Preferably, the alloy contains about 6.9 to 8.5 wt. % Zn; 1.2 to 1.7 wt. % Mg; 1.3 to 2 wt. % Cu. This alloy provides improved combinations of strength and fracture toughness in thick gauges. When artificially aged per the three stage method of preferred embodiments, this alloy also achieves superior SCC performance, including under seacoast conditions.

Claims (19)

1. A wrought aluminum alloy product having a sectional thickness of at least about 4 inches, the wrought aluminum alloy product comprising 7.0-9.5 wt. % Zn, 1.4-1.9 wt. % Mg, 1.4-1.9 wt. % Cu, up to 0.3 wt. % Zr, up to 0.4 wt. % Sc, up to 0.3 wt. % Hf, less than 0.05 wt. % Cr, and up to about 90.2% aluminum, wherein the combined amount of Cu and Mg does not exceed 3.5 wt. %, and wherein the aluminum alloy product realizes a longitudinal tensile yield strength and fracture toughness combination that satisfies the expression FT≧91.5-0.8333 (TYS) at a minimum longitudinal tensile yield strength of at least about 63 ksi, wherein FT is the quarter-plane L-T fracture toughness as measured in accordance with ASTM Standard E399, and wherein TYS is the quarter-plane longitudinal tensile yield strength measured in accordance with ASTM Standard E8.
