Abstract

A method for establishing a synchronous connection between two terminals over an asynchronous communication transport is provided. The method includes receiving, from a first secure terminal, an indication for establishing a connection with a second secure terminal. The indication is received at a first gateway, which then sends the indication to a second gateway. The first gateway negotiates with the first secure terminal to establish a connection with the first gateway. The negotiation is performed without the first gateway communicating with the second gateway or the second secure terminal. A second gateway also negotiates with the second secure terminal to establish a connection with the second gateway. When it is determined that the first secure terminal and first gateway have established a first connection and the second secure terminal and second gateway have established a second connection, a connection between the first secure terminal and the second secure terminal is established through the first gateway and the second gateway.

Claims (41)

1. A method for establishing an asynchronous connection through an asynchronous transport in a synchronous communication, the method comprising:

receiving, from a first terminal, an indication for establishing a synchronous connection with a second terminal at a first gateway;

sending the indication to a second gateway;

negotiating with the first terminal to establish a first connection with the first gateway, wherein negotiating the first connection is performed absent communication with the second terminal;

negotiating with the second terminal to establish a second connection with the second gateway, wherein negotiating the second connection is performed absent communication with the first terminal, and

establishing the asynchronous connection between the first gateway and the second gateway,

wherein the first connection and the second connection are negotiated in a parallel fashion and the first terminal sends data over the first connection without regard to a status of the second connection, and

wherein the second gateway stores the data for delivery to the second terminal when the data is received prior to establishing the second connection.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising relaying data from the first terminal to the first gateway, which then sends the data to the second gateway, wherein the second gateway sends the data to the second terminal.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the data sent from the first gateway to the second gateway is through a packet-based network.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the synchronous manner is time division multiplex or analog modem audio signals transported over a medium.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first gateway is more local to the first device than the second terminal and the second gateway is more local to the second device than the first terminal.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first gateway is configured to receive a synchronous data stream and convert it to an asynchronous data stream.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the second gateway is configured to receive the asynchronous data stream and convert it to a synchronous data stream.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first and second terminals comprise FNBDT or generic modem devices.

9. The method of claim 1 further comprising generating response tones at the first gateway used in establishing the first connection, wherein said response tones are independent of response tones generated by the second terminal for negotiating the second connection.

10. A telecommunications device for establishing an asynchronous connection through an asynchronous transport in a synchronous communication, the device comprising:

logic configured to receive, from a first terminal, an indication for establishing a synchronous connection with a second terminal at a first gateway;

logic configured to send the indication to a second gateway;

logic configured to negotiate with the first terminal to establish a first connection with the first gateway, wherein negotiating the first connection is performed absent communication with the second terminal;

logic configured to negotiate with the second terminal to establish a second connection with the second gateway, wherein negotiating the second connection is performed absent communication with the first terminal,

logic configured to establish the asynchronous connection between the first gateway and the second gateway,

wherein the first connection and the second connection are negotiated in a parallel fashion and the first terminal sends data over the first connection without regard to a status of negotiating the second connection, and

wherein the second gateway stores the data for delivery to the second terminal when the data is received prior to establishing the second connection.

11. The telecommunications device of claim 10 , further comprising logic to relay data from the first terminal to the first gateway, which then sends the data to the second gateway, wherein the second gateway sends the data to the second terminal.

12. The telecommunications device of claim 11 , wherein the data sent from the first gateway to the second gateway is through a packet-based network.

13. The telecommunications device of claim 11 , wherein the first gateway is more local to the first device than the second terminal and the second gateway is more local to the second device than the first terminal.

14. The telecommunications device of claim 11 , wherein the first gateway is configured to receive a synchronous data stream and convert it to an asynchronous data stream.

15. The telecommunications device of claim 14 , wherein the second gateway is configured to receive the asynchronous data stream and convert it to a synchronous data stream.

16. The telecommunications device of claim 11 , wherein the first and second terminals comprise FNBDT or generic modem devices.

17. The telecommunications device of claim 10 , wherein the synchronous manner is time division multiplex or analog modem audio signals transported over a medium.

18. A system for establishing a connection in an asynchronous communication for a secure communication, the system comprising:

a first secure terminal configured to send a synchronous data stream;

a first gateway configured to negotiate a first connection with the first secure terminal, to receive the synchronous data stream over the first connection, and to convert the synchronous data stream to an asynchronous data stream;

a second gateway configured to receive the asynchronous data stream and convert it to the synchronous data stream, the second gateway being further configured to negotiate a second connection with a second secure terminal and to deliver the synchronous data stream to the second secure terminal over the second connection;

wherein the first gateway is configured to generate modem response tones for establishing the first connection that are independent of modem response tones generated by the second secure terminal, and the second gateway is configured to generate modem response tones for establishing the second connection that are independent of modem response tones generated by the first secure terminal,

wherein the first connection and the second connection are negotiated in a parallel fashion and the first terminal sends data over the first connection without regard to a status of negotiating the second connection, and

wherein the second gateway stores the data for delivery to the second terminal when the data is received prior to establishing the second connection.

19. The system of claim 18 , wherein the synchronous data is TDM data or analog modem audio signals transported over a medium.

20. The system of claim 18 , wherein the asynchronous data stream is sent over a packet-based network.

21. The system of claim 18 , wherein the first gateway is local to the first secure device and the second gateway is local to the second secure device.
