Abstract

The wireless communication device contains at least one conductive tab that provides an antenna. The tab(s) form a pole antenna, and the tabs may also be attached across a slot to form a slot antenna. The tab(s) may be attached across a slot created in a package to form a slot antenna, or the tab(s) may be attached to a slot that is created as part of the wireless communication device to form a slot antenna. The tab(s) and/or the slot may also contain an adhesive material to attach the wireless communication device to a package, container or other material. More than one slot may be provided to form a circularly polarized antenna. The carrier may be a conductive material in which tabs are formed as part of the carrier before the wireless communication device is attached. The wireless communication device may have an asymmetrical antenna arrangement.

Claims (31)

1. A device, comprising:

a wireless communication device;

at least one conductive tab connected to said wireless communication device to form a first antenna; and

a conductive material including a non-conductive portion, said non-conductive portion forming a slot;

wherein the same at least one conductive tab is attached to said slot to form a second antenna that is a slot antenna.

2. The device of claim 1 , wherein said wireless communication device is configured to communicate at a first operating frequency using said at least one conductive tab and is further configured to simultaneously communicate at a second operating frequency when said at least one conductive tab is attached to said slot to form a slot antenna.

3. The device of claim 1 , wherein said at least one conductive tab is directly attached to said slot.

4. The device of claim 1 , wherein said at least one conductive tab is reactively coupled to said slot.

5. The device of claim 1 , wherein said at least one conductive tab is attached across said slot.

6. The device of claim 1 , wherein said at least one conductive tab is adhesive.

7. The device of claim 1 , wherein said at least one conductive tab contains adhesive.

8. A device, comprising:

a wireless communication device; and

at least one conductive tab connected to said wireless device;

said wireless communication device is configured to communicate at a first operating frequency using said at least one conductive tab and is further configured to communicate at a second operating frequency when the same at least one conductive tab is attached to a slot to form a slot antenna.

9. The device of claim 8 , wherein said wireless communication device is configured to communicate simultaneously at said first and second operating frequencies.

10. The device of claim 8 , wherein said at least one conductive tab is directly attached to said slot.

11. The device of claim 8 , wherein said at least one conductive tab is reactively coupled to said slot.

12. The device of claim 8 , wherein said at least one conductive tab is attached across said slot.

13. The device of claim 8 , wherein said at least one conductive tab is adhesive.

14. The device of claim 8 , wherein said at least one conductive tab contains adhesive.

15. A method, comprising:

placing at least one conductive tab in communication with a slot formed in a conductive material to form a slot antenna that is configured to communicate at a first frequency, wherein the same at least one conductive tab is further configured to communicate at a second frequency.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein said at least one conductive tab is further configured to communicate at said second frequency based at least in part on a length of said at least one conductive tab.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein said slot antenna and said at least one conductive tab are configured to communicate simultaneously at said first and second frequencies.

18. The method of claim 15 , wherein said placing at least one conductive tab in communication with said slot comprises attaching said at least one conductive tab directly to said slot.

19. The method of claim 15 , wherein said placing at least one conductive tab in communication with said slot comprises coupling said at least one conductive tab reactively to said slot.

20. The method of claim 15 , wherein said placing at least one conductive tab in communication with said slot comprises attaching said at least one conductive tab across said slot.

21. A method, comprising:

wirelessly communicating a signal at a first operating frequency using a conductive tab that forms a first antenna, wherein the same conductive tab is attached to a slot that forms a slot antenna; and

wirelessly communicating a signal at a second operating frequency using the slot antenna.
