Abstract

An integrated circuit for use at a reduced Vdd voltage. An integrated circuit is designed and implemented such that it is usable at a voltage less than an industry standard Vdd voltage. The integrated circuit may include a voltage filter that may either be implemented on the integrated circuit or external to the integrated circuit. The voltage filter receives an industry standard IC voltage and produces a filtered voltage that is that some value below the industry standard IC voltage. The voltage filter also removes noise from the industry standard IC voltage. The integrated circuit includes signal processing circuitry that is designed and implemented to improve signal quality and to operate at the filtered voltage.

Claims (18)

1. A transceiver module, comprising:

a connector suitable for receiving a plurality of voltage sources including an IC voltage from a power supply, the plurality of voltage sources each contributing noise to the IC voltage;

a voltage filter in communication with the connector, the voltage filter having an input voltage and an output voltage, the input voltage being the IC voltage, and the output voltage being a filtered voltage that is less than the IC voltage, the filtered voltage determined by a voltage drop across the voltage filter, wherein the voltage filter filters the noise contributed by the plurality of voltage sources including the IC voltage from the IC voltage; and

a signal processing IC in communication with the voltage filter, the signal processing IC having a Vdd selected to account for the voltage drop of the voltage filter such that the signal processing IC is configured to be powered by the filtered voltage, and the signal processing IC being operable at the filtered voltage.

2. The transceiver module as recited in claim 1 , further comprising:

a ROSA; and

a TOSA, one of the TOSA and the ROSA being in communication with the signal processing IC.

3. The transceiver module of claim 2 , wherein the IC voltage is one of: about 1.8V; about 3.3V; or, about 5V.

4. The transceiver module of claim 1 , wherein the transceiver module is compatible with a data rate of about 10 Gb/s.

5. The transceiver module of claim 1 , wherein the signal processing IC comprises one of: a clock and data recovery (CDR) circuit; an eye-opening circuit; and, an ASIC.

6. The transceiver module of claim 1 , wherein the voltage filter is integrated onto the signal processing IC.

7. The transceiver module of claim 1 , wherein the voltage filter comprises one of: a low-dropout (LDO) linear filter; a passive filter; or, an active filter.

8. The transceiver module of claim 1 , wherein the voltage filter is adapted to filter noise in a range from about 10 Khz to about 3 Mhz.

9. The transceiver module of claim 1 , wherein the signal processing IC includes a circuit that is sensitive to absolute voltage level and to noise.

10. The transceiver module of claim 1 , wherein the signal processing IC includes a phase locked loop (PLL).

11. The transceiver module of claim 1 , wherein the input voltage is a filtered voltage.

12. The transceiver module of claim 1 , wherein a drop in voltage between the input voltage and the output voltage is in a range of about 5% to about 10%.

13. The transceiver module of claim 1 , wherein a chip voltage Vdd associated with the signal processing IC is based upon a voltage drop associated with the voltage filter.
