Abstract

A method for creating mailpieces from a single web of printed material. The web of printed material includes printed matter to be used on envelopes, and other printed matter to be used on mail content to be included in the envelopes. The content pages are rectangular in shape and may be oriented relative to the envelope sheets in a number of different configurations. In some configurations, two sets of content pages and/or envelope sheets can be printed across the width of the web. The method starts with cutting consecutive sections of the web into separated sheets. Some of the separated sheets are envelope sheets including envelope printed matter, and some of the sheets are mail content sheets including mail content printed matter. The method includes cutting variable sized sheets depending on whether a sheet is a mail content sheet, or an envelope sheet. The method further includes cutting variable sized envelope sheets depending on the size of the mailpieces. In a preferred embodiment, the web includes business return envelopes (BREs). The BRE sheets are transported to an envelope creation path and in the envelope creation path where the sheets are formed into envelopes. The envelope creation path is then merged back with a content processing path whereby finished BRE's are stacked with their respective accumulations of folded content sheets to form a complete content stack. BRE's are then enclosed with the content sheets by the enclosing envelope sheets.

Claims (42)

1. A method for creating mailpieces from a single web of printed material, wherein the web of printed material includes printed matter to be used on envelopes, and other printed matter to be used as mail content to be included in the envelopes, the method comprising:

reading a code imprinted on the web of printed material, the code corresponding to instructions for assembling a mailpiece;

cutting consecutive sections of the web into separated sheets in accordance with the instructions, the sections comprising envelope sheets including envelope printed matter, and mail content sheets including mail content printed matter;

accumulating mail content sheets belonging to a same mailpiece in accordance with the instructions; and

enclosing the accumulated mail content sheets in a corresponding envelope sheet;

wherein the step of cutting further includes cutting variable sized sheets in accordance with the instructions depending on whether a sheet is a mail content sheet, or an envelope sheet.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of cutting variable sized sheets further includes cutting larger sized envelope sheets for mailpieces with larger quantities of content sheets and smaller envelope sheets for mailpieces having smaller quantities of content sheets.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of cutting variable sized sheets includes cutting variable sized content sheets in accordance with the instructions.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of enclosing includes wrapping the envelope sheet around the accumulated mail content sheets whereby a closed mailpiece is formed.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein after the step of accumulating, further including the step of folding at least some of the accumulated mail content sheets in accordance with the instructions.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of cutting variable sized sheets includes using a laser cutter to cut the variable sized sheets.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the step of using a laser cutter for variable sized cutting includes continuously moving the web of printed material while cuts are being made.

8. The method of claim 7 wherein the step of cutting with the laser cutter further includes cutting mailpiece specific features into the sheets, in accordance with the instructions.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of reading the code includes reading instructions directly embedded in the code.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of reading the code includes reading a file identifier from the code and referring to a corresponding data file to retrieve mailpiece instructions.

11. A method or creating mailpieces from a single web of printed material, wherein the web of printed material includes printed matter to be used on envelopes, and other printed matter to be used as mail content to be included in the envelopes, the method comprising:

reading a code imprinted on the web of printed material, the code corresponding to instructions for assembling a mailpiece,

cutting consecutive sections of the web into seperated sheets in accrodance with the instructions, the sections comprising envelope sheets including envelope printed matter, and mail content sheets including mail content printed matter;

accumulating mail content sheets belonging to a same mailpiece in accordance with the instructions;

enclosing the accumulated mail content sheets in a corresponding envelope sheet;

mail content sheets include business return envelope (BRE) sheets, and further comprising the steps of:

transporting at least the BRE sheets to an envelope creation path and in accordance with the assembling instructions:

applying adhesive to a surface of the BRE sheets;

folding the BRE sheets into finished BRE's fastened by the applied adhesive; and

transporting the finished BRE's out of the envelope creation path; and

merging the envelop creation path and a content processing path whereby finished BRE's are stacked with their respective accumulations of folded content sheets to form a complete content packet, and whereby the envelope content packet is enclosed by the corresponding envelope sheet.

12. A method for creating mailpieces from a single web of printed material, wherein the web of printed material includes printed matter to be used on envelopes, and other printed matter to be used as mail content to be included in the envelopes, the method comprising:

reading a code imprinted on the web of printed material, the code corresponding to instructions for assembling a mailpiece;

cutting consecutive sections of web into separated sheets in accordance with the instructions, the sections comprising envelope sheets including envelope printed matter, and mail content sheets including mail content printed matter;

accumulating mail content sheets belonging to a same mailpiece in accordance with the instructions; and

enclosing the accumulated mail content sheets in a corresponding envelope sheet;

where the step of reading the code further includes a step of receiving instructions regarding a variable number of content sheets, variable page dimensions, optional folded pages, optional business return envelope (BRE) creation, and variable sized enclosing envelope sheet creation.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein the step of enclosing includes wrapping the envelope sheet around the accumulated mail content sheets whereby a closed mailpiece is formed.

14. The method of claim 12 wherein after the step of accumulating, further including the step of folding at least some of the accumulated mail content sheets in accordance with the instructions.

15. The method of claim 12 wherein the mail content sheets include business return envelope (BRE) sheets, and further comprising the steps of:

transporting at least the BRE sheets to an envelope creation path and in the envelope creation path, and in accordance with the instructions;

applying adhesive to a surface of the BRE sheets;

folding the BRE sheets into finished BRE's fastened together by the applied adhesive; and

transporting the finished BRE's out of envelope creation path; and

merging the envelope creation path and a content processing path whereby finished BRE's are stacked with their respective accumulations of folded content sheets to form a complete content packet, and whereby the complete content packet is enclosed by the corresponding envelope sheet.

16. The method of claim 12 wherein the step of reading the code includes reading instructions directly embedded in the code.

17. The method of claim 12 wherein the step of reading the code includes reading a file identifier from the code and referring to a corresponding data file to retrieve mailpiece instructions.
