Abstract

Apparatus is provided including an electrode device, adapted to be coupled to a site of a subject; and a control unit, adapted to drive the electrode device to apply a current to the site intermittently during alternating “on” and “off” periods, each of the “on” periods having an “on” duration equal to between 1 and 10 seconds, and each of the “off” periods having an “off” duration equal to at least 50% of the “on” duration. Other embodiments are also described.

Claims (19)

1. Apparatus comprising:

an electrode device, configured to be coupled to a site of a subject;

an electrocardiogram (ECG) monitor, configured to detect a feature of an ECG of the subject; and

a control unit, configured to:

drive the electrode device to apply to the site intermittent electrical stimulation during “on” periods, which electrical stimulation includes a series of bursts that commence in respective cardiac cycles after a delay after the feature of the ECG detected by the ECG monitor, wherein each of the bursts includes at least one pulse, wherein the “on periods” alternate with “off” periods in which the stimulation is not applied, and wherein each of the “on” periods has an “on” duration equal to at least 1 second, and each of the “off” periods has an “off” duration equal to at least 50% of the “on” duration,

responsively to the sensed heart rate, set at least one parameter of the stimulation,

compare (a) a ratio of (i) a duration of each “on” period to (ii) the sum of the duration of each “on” period and a duration of each “off” period to (b) a quotient of a number of bursts of the stimulation applied divided by a number of heart beats during the “on” and “off” periods, and

detect a presence of a heart-rate-lowering effect of the stimulation responsively to finding that the quotient is less than the ratio.

2. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the site is selected from the group consisting of: a vagus nerve of the subject, an epicardial fat pad of the subject, a pulmonary vein of the subject, a carotid artery of the subject, a carotid sinus of the subject, a coronary sinus of the subject, a vena cava vein of the subject, a right ventricle of the subject, and a jugular vein of the subject, and wherein the electrode device is configured to be coupled to the selected site.

3. The apparatus according to claim 1 , wherein the control unit is configured to detect the presence of the heart-rate-lowering effect based on the quotient over a time period that includes at least one full “on” period and one full “off” period.

4. A method comprising:

detecting a feature of an electrocardiogram (ECG) of a subject;

applying to a site of the subject intermittent electrical stimulation during “on” periods, which electrical stimulation includes a series of bursts that commence in respective cardiac cycles after a delay after the detected feature of the ECG, wherein each of the bursts includes at least one pulse, wherein the “on periods” alternate with “off” periods in which the stimulation is not applied, and wherein each of the “on” periods has an “on” duration equal to at least 1 second, and each of the “off” periods has an “off” duration equal to at least 50% of the “on” duration;

responsively to the sensed heart rate, setting at least one parameter of the stimulation;

comparing (a) a ratio of (i) a duration of each “on” period to (ii) the sum of the duration of each “on” period and a duration of each “off” period to (b) a quotient of a number of bursts of the stimulation applied divided by a number of heart beats during the “on” and “off” periods; and

detecting a presence of a heart-rate-lowering effect of the stimulation responsively to finding that the quotient is less than the ratio.

5. The method according to claim 4 , wherein

the site is selected from the group consisting of: a vagus nerve of the subject, an epicardial fat pad of the subject, a pulmonary vein of the subject, a carotid artery of the subject, a carotid sinus of the subject, a coronary sinus of the subject, a vena cava vein of the subject, a right ventricle of the subject, and a jugular vein of the subject, and wherein applying the electrical stimulation comprises applying the electrical stimulation to the selected site.

6. The method according to claim 4 , wherein detecting the presence of the heart-rate-lowering effect comprises detecting the presence based on the quotient over a time period that includes at least one full “on” period and one full “off” period.
