Abstract

A housing for a seismic sensing element ( 3 ) for use on the earth's surface comprises connecting means ( 5 ) for connecting the housing ( 3 ) to a support cable ( 2 ) so as to allow relative movement between the sensor housing ( 3 ) and the cable ( 2 ). This de-couples the sensor housing from the support cable, and improves the fidelity of the sensor. The connecting means ( 5 ) preferably comprises resilient connecting elements, to prevent the transmission of vibrations between the support cable and the sensor housing. The sensor housing ( 3 ) preferably has a flat base ( 1 ), so that there is good coupling between the sensor housing and the earth. Alternatively, the sensor housing can be fitted with a base member (( 24 a, 24 b, 24 c ) that has at least one flat face ( 26, 26 a, 26 b, 26 c ).

Claims (25)

1. A housing for a seismic sensing element for use on the earth's surface, the housing comprising:

means for connecting the housing to a support cable so as to allow relative movement between the housing and the cable, and

means for damping the transmission of vibrations between the cable and the housing.

2. The housing of claim 1 wherein the connecting means are the damping means.

3. The housing of claim 1 comprising a base that is substantially flat and comprises two or more substantially flat faces arranged substantially symmetrically with respect to an axis of rotation of the base about the cable, wherein the maximum extent of the base in a direction parallel to the cable is substantially equal to the maximum extent of the base in a direction perpendicular to the cable.

4. The housing of claim 3 wherein the base is integral with the housing.

5. The housing of claim 3 wherein the housing is detachably received in the base.

6. The housing of claim 3 wherein the base is selected to have a high coefficient of friction against the earth's surface.

7. The housing of claim 3 wherein the base is roughened.

8. The housing of claim 5 wherein the housing is rotatable with respect to the base when the housing is received in the base.

9. The housing of claim 3 wherein the connecting means allows relative movement between the housing and the cable in a direction parallel to the cable.

10. The housing of claim 3 wherein the connecting means allows relative movement between the housing and the cable in a direction perpendicular to the cable.

11. The housing of claim 5 wherein the base is adapted to be clip-fit onto the housing.

12. The housing of claim 5 wherein the housing and/or the base comprise retaining means for retaining the base on the housing.

13. The housing of claim 12 wherein the retaining means comprises a quick release coupling.

14. The housing of claim 1 wherein the housing is arranged substantially symmetrically with respect to an axis of rotation of the housing about the support cable.

15. The housing of claim 1 wherein the damping means comprises at least one resilient element disposed between the housing and the cable.

16. The housing of claim 1 further comprising at least one seismic sensing element disposed within the housing.

17. The housing of claim 16 wherein four seismic sensing elements are disposed within the housing, a first sensing element being for measuring the pressure and the second to fourth sensing elements being for measuring three non-coplanar components of the elastic wavefield.

18. The housing of claim 16 wherein, in use, the center of mass of the sensor is substantially co-incident with the axis of a support cable.

19. A seismic sensor comprising a housing, the housing comprising connecting means for connecting the housing to a support cable so as to allow relative movement between the housing and the cable, the housing including damping means for restricting the transmission of vibrations between the cable and the housing.

20. The seismic sensor of claim 19 wherein the connecting means are the damping means.

21. The seismic sensor of claim 19 and at least one seismic sensing element disposed within the housing.

22. The seismic sensor of claim 21 wherein four seismic sensing elements are disposed within the housing, a first sensing element being for measuring the pressure and the second to fourth sensing elements being for measuring three non-coplanar components of the elastic wavefield.

23. The seismic sensor of claim 21 , wherein, in use, the center of mass of the sensor is substantially co-incident with the axis of a support cable.
