Abstract

A method for producing a nozzle rim for a printer involves depositing a first sacrificial layer upon a substrate and then removing portions of the sacrificial layer so as to form a blank. A nozzle layer is then deposited over the surface of the blank. Subsequently, the nozzle layer and sacrificial layer are collectively truncated to a first level so as to form a nozzle rim. In a preferred embodiment the step of truncating the nozzle layer and sacrificial layer employs a chemical mechanical planarization technique.

Claims (14)

1. A method for producing a nozzle rim for a printer, the method comprising the steps of:

depositing a first sacrificial layer upon a substrate;

removing portions of the first sacrificial layer so as to form a blank;

depositing a nozzle layer over the surface of the blank; and

truncating the nozzle layer and sacrificial layer to a first level so as to form the nozzle rim.

2. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the deposited nozzle layer is of uniform thickness over the surface of the blank.

3. A method according to claim 1 , further comprising the step of:

separating the blank from the nozzle rim.

4. A method according to claim 1 , wherein step of truncating uses a chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) technique.

5. A method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of removing involves using an etching process.

6. A method according to claim 5 , wherein a circular pit is etched for collecting any ink which, in use, spills over the nozzle outlet.

7. A method according to claim 1 wherein, in between the steps of depositing and truncating, the method further involves the step of:

depositing a second sacrificial layer on the nozzle layer.

8. A nozzle rim formed using the method according to claim 1 .
