Abstract

A printhead assembly is provided comprising a plurality of nozzles arranged to eject ink from an associated nozzle opening onto media in an ejection direction, and a nozzle guard arranged to cover the nozzles in the ejection direction so as to provide a space between the nozzles and the nozzle guard. The nozzle guard comprises a plurality of passages positioned so that each passage is in register with a corresponding one of the nozzle openings and an inlet arranged to direct fluid over the nozzles and through the passages so that a fluid pressure within the space is less than that within the space without the fluid. This low pressure region above the nozzles inhibits the build up of foreign particles on the nozzles.

Claims (15)

1. A printhead assembly comprising:

a plurality of nozzles arranged to eject ink from an associated nozzle opening onto media in an ejection direction; and

a nozzle guard arranged to cover the nozzles in the ejection direction and spaced apart from the nozzles, the nozzle guard comprising:

a plurality of passages positioned so that each passage is in register with a corresponding one of the nozzle openings; and

at least one inlet arranged to direct fluid over the nozzles and through the passages so that a pressure within a space is less than that within the space without the fluid.

2. A printhead assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the fluid is directed over the nozzles and through the passages at a velocity that is less than the velocity of the ejected ink.

3. A printhead assembly according to claim 2 , wherein the ink is ejected at a velocity of 3 m/s.

4. A printhead assembly according to claim 3 , wherein the fluid is directed over the nozzles and through the passages at a velocity of 1 m/s.

5. A printhead assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the nozzle guard further comprises:

a body arranged to cover the nozzles in the ejection direction and to define the passages; and

at least one support arranged to support the body on the nozzles.

6. A printhead assembly according to claim 5 , wherein the support is an integral part of the body and incorporates a pair of spaced support elements, one support element being arranged at each end of the body.

7. A printhead assembly according to claim 6 , wherein the at least one inlet is provided in one of the support elements.

8. A printhead assembly according to claim 7 , wherein the at least one inlet is provided in the support element which is remote from a bond pad of the nozzles.

9. A printhead assembly according to claim 5 , wherein the body is formed of silicon.
