Abstract

An optical ring network has one or more working wavelengths and multiple protection wavelengths adapted to support the working wavelength(s). Routing tables may be used in network nodes to assign traffic of a failed working wavelength to a protection wavelength. The protection technique may be applied to networks employing, for example, Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM).

10. A method for performing optical networking protection, comprising:

performing network operations via at least one working wavelength;

supporting a given working wavelength of the at least one working wavelength with multiple protection wavelengths by dynamically assigning the multiple protection wavelengths to the given working wavelength; and

engaging multiple protection wavelengths to support multiple failures on the given working wavelength.

11. The method according to claim 10 wherein the multiple protection wavelengths compose a resource pool.

12. The method according to claim 10 wherein supporting the given working wavelength includes performing the network operations via a primary protection wavelength.

13. The method according to claim 12 further including determining if the primary wavelength is busy and, if so, performing the network operations via a secondary protection wavelength.

14. The method according to claim 13 wherein the secondary protection wavelength is a primary protection wavelength for another working wavelength.

15. The method according to claim 10 further including storing correspondence between working wavelengths and protection wavelengths in a dynamic manner.

19. A node in an optical ring network, comprising:

an interface, transmitting and receiving network traffic with an interface of another network node via a given working wavelength of at least one working wavelength, adapted to (i) dynamically transmit and receive the network traffic with the other interface via multiple protection wavelengths in an event communications via the given working wavelength are disrupted and (ii) engage multiple protection wavelengths assigned to support the given working wavelength in an event of multiple failures on the given working wavelength.

20. The node according to claim 19 wherein the multiple protection wavelengths compose a resource pool.

21. The network node according to claim 19 wherein the interface switches from communicating via the given working wavelength to a primary protection wavelength.
