Abstract

A cable tester tests cable to determine a cable status. The cable status includes an open status, a normal status and a short status. A pretest module senses activity on the cable and selectively enables testing based on said sensed activity. A test module is enabled by the pretest module, transmits a test pulse on the cable, measures a reflection amplitude and calculates a cable length. The test module determines the cable status based on the measured amplitude and the calculated cable length.

Claims (36)

a pretest module that senses activity on the cable and that selectively enables testing depending upon said sensed activity; and

a test module that is enabled by said pretest module, that transmits a test pulse on the cable, that measures a reflection amplitude, that calculates a cable length, and that determines said cable status based on said measured amplitude and said calculated cable length, wherein said cable tester repeats said test N times where N is an integer greater than one and performs a calculation on at least one of said N cable status, said N measured amplitudes and said N calculated cable lengths.

2. The physical layer device of claim 1 wherein said calculation includes at least one of a mathematical function and a Boolean function.

3. The physical layer device of claim 2 wherein said mathematical function is an averaging function.

4. The physical layer device of claim 1 further comprising a comparing circuit that compares said calculation to a predetermined threshold to determine said cable status.

5. The physical layer device of claim 1 further comprising an indicator for displaying at least one of said cable status, said calculation, said calculated cable length and said measured reflection amplitude.

6. The physical layer device of claim 1 wherein said cable tester is implemented in a network device.

7. The physical layer device of claim 4 wherein said comparing circuit compares at least one of an average amplitude and an average calculated length to at least one of first and second predetermined thresholds to determine said cable status.

8. The physical layer device of claim 1 wherein said cable tester is integrated with said physical layer device in a single integrated circuit.

9. The physical layer device of claim 7 wherein said physical layer device is implemented in an Ethernet device that is 802.3ab compliant.

10. A physical layer device that communicates over a cable, comprising:

cable testing means that determines a cable status of the cable, wherein said cable status includes an open status, a short status, and a normal status, and wherein said cable testing means includes:

pretest means for sensing activity on the cable and for selectively enabling testing depending upon said sensed activity; and

test means, that is enabled by said pretest means, for transmitting a test pulse on the cable, measuring a reflection amplitude and calculating a cable length,

wherein said test means determines said cable status based on said measured amplitude and said calculated cable length, wherein said cable testing means repeats said test N times where N is an integer greater than one and performs a calculation on at least one of said N cable status, said N measured amplitudes and said N calculated cable lengths.

11. The physical layer device of claim 10 wherein said calculation includes at least one of a mathematical function and a Boolean function.

12. The physical layer device of claim 11 wherein said mathematical function is an averaging function.

13. The physical layer device of claim 10 further comprising comparing means that compares said calculation to a predetermined threshold to determine said cable status.

14. The physical layer device of claim 13 wherein said comparing means compares at least one of an average amplitude and an average calculated length to at least one of first and second predetermined thresholds to determine said cable status.

15. The physical layer device of claim 14 wherein said physical layer device is implemented in an Ethernet device that is 802.3ab compliant.

16. The physical layer device of claim 10 further comprising indicating means for displaying at least one of said cable status, said calculation, said calculated cable length and said measured reflection amplitude.

17. The physical layer device of claim 10 wherein said cable testing means is implemented in a network device.
