Abstract

A method for manufacturing a distribution fiber optic cable is disclosed. The method comprises the steps of providing a plurality of optical fibers for a cable core. Transitioning at least one of the plurality of optical fibers between a first location and a second location, where one of the locations is disposed within the cable core and the other location is disposed apart from the cable core and applying a cable jacket. In other embodiments, the cable can be a portion of a cable assembly.

2. The method of claim 1 , the second location being disposed apart from the cable core so that the at least one of the plurality of optical fibers becomes an access optical fiber.

3. The method of claim 1 , the second location being disposed apart from the cable core so that the at least one of the plurality of optical fibers becomes an access optical fiber, wherein the access optical fiber ends in the second location.

4. The method of claim 1 , the step of transitioning further comprising transitioning multiple optical fibers from the first location to the second location.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of transitioning the at least one of the plurality of optical fibers back to the first location at a different longitudinal position along the cable before applying the cable jacket.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step off providing the at least one optical fiber carrier for at least one of the plurality of optical fibers.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of providing at least one cable component selected from the group consisting of a grease, a gel, at least one-water blocking component, at least one strength member, at least one strength component, at least one access location ripcord, a filler component, an access location ripcord locator portion, an armor layer, and at least one binder.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising the step of providing at least one cable core binder, the at least one cable core binder being wrapped about the cable core together and providing a second binder radially outward of the at least one cable core binder, wherein the second binder has a tear resistance that is less than a tear resistance of that of the at least one cable core binder.

9. The method of claim 1 , further including the step of attaching a ferrule to the at least one access optical fiber before applying the cable jacket.

10. The method of claim 1 , further including the step of constructing a distribution cable assembly after applying the cable jacket.

11. The method of claim 1 , further including the step of constructing a distribution cable assembly including the steps of:

opening the cable jacket after applying the same; and

providing and attaching a fiber optic tether cable, wherein the fiber optic tether cable includes an optical fiber that is in optical communication with the at least one of the plurality of optical fibers.

12. The method of claim 11 , further including the step of attaching a connector to the fiber optic tether cable.

13. The method of claim 1 , further including the step of constructing a distribution cable assembly including the steps of:

opening the cable jacket after applying the same;

exposing at least one access optical fiber; and

attaching a ferrule to the at least one access optical fiber.

14. A method for manufacturing a distribution fiber optic cable comprising the steps of:

providing a plurality of optical fibers

providing a plurality of optical fiber carriers, wherein some of the optical fiber carriers include one or more of the plurality of optical fibers, some of the optical fiber carriers forming a portion of a cable core;

transitioning at least one of the plurality of optical fiber carriers from a first location within the cable core to a second location apart from the cable core, thereby creating at least one access optical fiber carrier having at least one access optical fiber within at least one access location; and

applying a cable jacket, wherein the transitioning at least one of the plurality of optical fiber carries occurs before the cable jacket is applied so that the at least one access optical fiber carrier is initially disposed apart from the cable core within an unbreached cable jacket.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the at least one access optical fiber ends in the second location.

16. The method of claim 14 , further comprising the step of transitioning multiple optical fiber carriers from the first location to the second location.

17. The method of claim 14 , further comprising the step of transitioning the at least one access optical fiber back into the cable core at a different longitudinal position along the cable before applying the cable jacket.

18. The method of claim 14 , further comprising the step of transitioning the at least one access optical fiber back into the cable core at a different longitudinal position along the cable and then transitioning the at least one access optical fiber into a second access location apart from the cable core at a further longitudinal position along the cable.

19. The method of claim 14 , further comprising the step of providing at least one cable component selected from the group consisting of a grease, a gel, at least one-water blocking component, at least one strength member, at least one strength component, at least one access location ripcord, a filler component, an access location ripcord locator portion, an armor layer, and at least one binder.

20. The method of claim 14 , further comprising the step of providing at least one cable core binder, the at least one cable core binder being wrapped about the cable core and providing a second binder radially outward of the at least one cable core binder, wherein the second binder has a tear resistance that is less than a tear resistance of that of the at least one cable core binder.
