Abstract

An azimuthally sensitive logging while drilling tool is disclosed. The tool may be suitable, for example, to measure azimuthal variations of electrical properties of a subterranean formation. The tool includes at least one transmitter disposed to transmit electromagnetic energy and a longitudinally spaced receiver array. The receiver array includes a plurality of discrete magnetic field sensors deployed about a circumference of the tool body. In one exemplary embodiment, the tool includes six or more magnetic field sensors selected from either giant magnetoresistive sensors or anisotropic magnetoresistive sensors.

1. A logging while drilling tool comprising:

a tool body;

at least one transmitter deployed on the tool body and disposed to transmit electromagnetic energy into a subterranean formation;

a receiver array including a plurality of discrete, circumferentially-spaced magnetic field sensors, the receiver array being longitudinally spaced from the at least one transmitter, each of the discrete, circumferentially-spaced magnetic field sensors being disposed to provide an electrical output signal indicative of an electromagnetic field strength proximate to the sensor, a non uniformity in the output signals being indicative of an azimuthal asymmety in an electrical property of the subterranean formation.

2. The logging while drilling tool of claim 1 , wherein the circumferentially-spaced magnetic field sensors are selected from the group consisting of magnetometers and magnetoresistive sensors.

3. The logging while drilling tool of claim 1 , wherein the circumferentially-spaced magnetic field sensors are magnetoresistive sensors selected from the group consisting of giant magnetoresistive sensors and anisotropic magnetoresistive sensors.

4. The logging while drilling tool of claim 1 , wherein each of the discrete, circumferentially-spaced magnetic field sensors includes a tri-axial magnetic field sensor.

5. The logging while drilling tool of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of discrete, circumferentially-spaced magnetic field sensors is located on a plane substantially orthogonal to a longitudinal axis of the tool body.

6. The logging while drilling tool of claim 1 , wherein the discrete, circumferentially-spaced magnetic field sensors are deployed substantially equi-angularly about the periphery of the tool body.

7. The logging while drilling tool of claim 1 , further comprising first and second receiver arrays, the first and second receiver arrays each including a plurality of discrete, circumferentially-spaced magnetic field sensors, the first and second receiver arrays being longitudinally spaced on the tool body.

8. The logging while drilling tool of claim 7 , comprising a first transmitter and a second transmitter, the first and second transmitters longitudinally spaced apart on the tool body and positioned such that the first and second receiver arrays are located between the first and second transmitters.

9. The logging while drilling tool of claim 1 , further comprising first and second longitudinally spaced transmitters.

10. The logging while drilling tool of claim 1 , wherein the transmitter comprises a loop antenna including an exposed wire portion, the exposed wire portion deployed about at least a portion of a circumference of the tool body.

11. The logging while drilling tool of claim 10 , wherein the transmitter comprises at least one sector antenna.

12. The logging while drilling tool of claim 1 , wherein each of the magnetic field sensors are deployed in corresponding circumferentially spaced bores formed in an outer surface of the tool body.

13. The logging while drilling tool of claim 1 , further comprising an azimuth sensor deployed on the tool body.

14. The logging while drilling tool of claim 1 , wherein the receiver array comprises at least six magnetic field sensors.

15. The logging while drilling tool of claim 1 , wherein a sum of the electrical signals from each of the circumferentially spaced magnetic field sensors provides a nonazimuthally sensitive indication of the electrical property.

16. A logging while drilling tool comprising:

a tool body;

at least one transmitter deployed on the tool body, the transmitter including a loop antenna having an exposed wire portion deployed about at least a portion of a circumference of the tool body, the transmitter disposed to transmit electromagnetic energy into a subterranean formation;

a receiver array including a plurality of discrete magnetoresistive sensors selected from the group consisting of giant magnetoresistive sensors and anisotropic magnetoresistive sensors, the receiver array longitudinally spaced from the transmitter, each of the discrete magnetoresistive sensors being disposed to provide an electrical output signal indicative of an electromagnetic field strength proximate to the sensor, a non uniformity in the output signals being indicative of an azimuthal asymmetry in an electrical property of the subterranean formation.

17. The logging while drilling tool of claim 16 , wherein the magnetoresistive sensors are located on a plane substantially orthogonal to a longitudinal axis of the tool body.

18. The logging while drilling tool of claim 16 , wherein the magnetoresistive sensors are positioned substantially equi-angularly about a circumference of the tool body.

19. The logging while drilling tool of claim 16 , wherein a sum of the electrical signals from each of the circumferentially spaced magnetoresistive sensors provides a non-azimuthally sensitive indication of the electrical property.

20. The logging while drilling tool of claim 16 , comprising a pair of longitudinally spaced transmitters deployed about said receiver array.

21. A logging while drilling tool comprising:

a substantially cylindrical logging while drilling tool body;
