Abstract

A service broker of telecommunications networks is described herein. According to one embodiment, in response to a telephony call event from a subscriber to be serviced by a plurality of services, for each of the plurality of services, a service description associated with the respective service is examined to identify which of the plurality of service is capable of handling the telephony call event, where the service description semantically describes the respective service. Thereafter, the telephony call event is distributed to one or more of the identified services that are capable of handling the telephony call event, where the telephony call event is processed by the one or more services. Other methods and apparatuses are also described.

Claims (25)

1. A method for processing telephony call events from a plurality of subscribers, wherein each of the subscribers is subscribed to one or more services, comprising:

receiving a telephony call event from a subscriber and, for each of the services subscribed to by the subscriber, examining a service description associated with the respective service to identify which of the services are capable of handling the telephony call event, the service description semantically describing the respective service, and wherein the service description associated with each respective service comprises a service profile for defining the respective service provided to the subscriber and a resource usage model used by the respective service;

distributing the telephony call event to one or more of the identified services that are capable of handling the telephony call event, wherein the telephony call event is processed by the one or more of the identified services; and

repeating the receiving and distributing steps for each of the plurality of subscribers.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the service description further comprises:

a service model for defining how the respective service is to be executed in an execution environment; and

a service invocation for defining how the respective service is invoked by the execution environment.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein a programming language of the service description is configured independent of the execution environment, and further wherein the execution environment executes the one or more services in a manner specified by the service description.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the programming language comprises an extensible mark-up language (XML).

5. The method of claim 3 , wherein the service description comprises one or more reusable service building blocks linked by the programming language, each of the reusable service building blocks specifying a component of a service described by the service description.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein each of the reusable service building blocks comprises one or more reusable primitives, each of the reusable primitives specifying a component of a reusable service building block.

7. A machine-readable medium having executable code to cause a machine to perform a method of a network access device, the method comprising:

receiving a telephony call event from a subscriber subscribed to one or more services and, for each of the services, examining a service description associated with the respective service to identify which of the services are capable of handling the telephony call event, the service description semantically describing the respective service, and wherein the service description associated with each respective service comprises a service profile for defining the respective service provided to the subscriber and a resource usage model used by the respective service;

distributing the telephony call event to one or more of the identified services that are capable of handling the telephony call event, wherein the telephony call event is processed by the one or more of the identified services; and

repeating the receiving and distributing steps for each of a plurality of subscribers.

8. The machine-readable medium of claim 7 , wherein the service description further comprises:

a service model for defining how the respective service is to be executed in an execution environment; and

a service invocation for defining how the respective service is invoked by the execution environment.

9. The machine-readable medium of claim 8 , wherein a programming language of the service description is configured independent of the execution environment, and further wherein the execution environment executes the one or more services in a manner specified by the service description.

10. The machine-readable medium of claim 9 , wherein the service description comprises one or more reusable service building blocks linked by the programming language, each of the reusable service building blocks specifying a component of a service described by the service description.

11. The machine-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein each of the reusable service building blocks comprises one or more reusable primitives, each of the reusable primitives specifying a component of a reusable service building block.

12. A system for processing telephony call events from a plurality of subscribers, wherein each of the subscribers is subscribed to one or more services, the system comprising:

an application module to provide a plurality of services to a plurality of subscribers;

a call control module to manage telephony call events from a plurality of subscribers; and

a service broker communicatively coupled to the application module and the call control module, wherein the service broker is operable to (i) receive a telephony call event associated with a subscriber from the call control module, (ii) determine to which of the plurality of services the subscriber is subscribed, (iii) examine a service description associated with each of the subscribed services to identify which of the subscribed services are capable of handling the telephony call event, and (iv) distribute the telephony call event to the application module for providing the identified services to the subscriber.
