Abstract

An ink jet printhead chip includes a substrate that defines a plurality of ink inlet channels. A plurality of nozzles is positioned on the substrate and is in fluid communication with the ink inlet channels. A plurality of elongate micro-electromechanical actuators is fast with the substrate at one end, an opposed end being displaceable relative to the substrate on receipt of an electrical drive signal. Each opposed end is operative on a respective nozzle to eject ink from the nozzle. Control circuitry and drive circuitry for each actuator is positioned on the substrate and interposed between the actuator and the substrate.

Claims (12)

1. An ink jet printhead chip that comprises

a substrate that defines a plurality of ink inlet channels;

a plurality of nozzles positioned on the substrate and in fluid communication with the ink inlet channels;

a plurality of elongate micro-electromechanical actuators fast with the substrate at one end, an opposed end being displaceable relative to the substrate on receipt of an electrical drive signal, each opposed end being operative on a respective nozzle to eject ink from the nozzle; and

control circuitry and drive circuitry for each actuator being positioned on the substrate and interposed between the actuator and the substrate.

An ink jet printhead chip as claimed in claim 1 , in which each micro-electromechanical actuator includes a heater element that is activated by the drive circuitry to heat and expand such that the expansion and subsequent contraction of the heater element generates reciprocal movement of said opposed end of the actuator.

3. An ink jet printhead chip as claimed in claim 2 , in which each heater element defines a plurality of transverse corrugations along at least a portion of a length of the heater element.

An ink jet printhead chip as claimed in claim 3 , in which the control circuitry for each actuator includes a shift register, a transfer register and a control gate, while the drive circuitry for each actuator includes a drive transistor connected to the heater element to provide the heater element with an electrical current for heating of the heater element, on receipt of a signal from the control gate.

5. An ink jet printhead chip as claimed in claim 4 , in which each drive transistor includes a plurality of traces oriented to correspond with the orientation of the corrugations in the associated heater elements.

An ink jet printhead chip as claimed in claim 2 , in which each heater element has a reducing cross-sectional area towards said one end of each actuator to enhance heating and thus expansion of the heater element in a region proximate said one end, thereby enhancing displacement of the actuator.

An ink jet printhead chip as claimed in claim 6 , in which each nozzle defines a nozzle chamber and an ink ejection port in fluid communication with the nozzle chamber, each actuator including an ink ejection member that is positioned in the nozzle chamber to eject ink from the ink ejection port on displacement of the actuator.

8. An ink jet printhead chip as claimed in claim 7 in which each ink ejection member includes a structural portion comprised of heater element material, the structural portion being electrically isolated from the associated heater element by a discontinuity in the heater element material.
