Abstract

A porous intervertebral spacer having a flexible wire mesh as a vertebral body contact surface, the flexible wire mesh preferably being a convex titanium mesh laser-welded at its perimeter to the spacer. The mesh is domed in its initial undeflected conformation, but deflects as necessary during insertion of the spacer between vertebral bodies, and, once the spacer is seated between the vertebral bodies, deforms as necessary under anatomical loads to reshape itself to the concave surface of the vertebral endplate, providing gripping and holding strength upon initial implantation, and an osteoinductive surface through which the bone may ultimately grow, making the fixation of the spacer between the vertebral bodies secure.

Claims (16)

1. An intervertebral spacer comprising:

a body having a central trunk, a first radial flange adjacent a top surface of the central trunk and a second radial flange adjacent a bottom surface of the central trunk, the first and second radial flanges each having a top surface including a groove formed therein; and

first and second vertebral body contact elements each having a convex central portion and a downwardly bent perimeter, the first vertebral body contact element fixed to the groove of the top surface of the first radial flange and a second vertebral body contact element fixed to groove of the top surface of the second radial flange,

wherein the first and second vertebral body contact elements, the central trunk, and the first and second radial flanges each have a plurality of holes therein.

2. The intervertebral spacer of claim 1 , wherein the first and second vertebral body contact elements facilitate tissue in-growth in and around the intervertebral spacer.

The intervertebral spacer of claim 1 , wherein the convex central portion of the first vertebral body contact element is remote from the top surface of the first radial flange and the convex central portion of the second vertebral boby contact element is remote from the top surface of the second radial flange.

4. The intervertebral spacer of claim 1 , wherein the first and second vertebral body contact elements are dome shaped.

The intervertebral spacer of claim 1 , wherein the perimeter of the first vertebral body contact element is laser welded to the groove of the top surface of the first radial flange and the perimeter of the second vertebral body contact element is laser welded to the groove of the top surface of the second radial flange.

6. The intervertebral spacer of claim 1 , wherein the first and second vertebral body contact elements are a flexible wire mesh.

7. The intervertebral spacer of claim 1 , wherein the first and second vertebral body contact elements are flexible.

8. The intervertebral spacer of claim 1 , wherein the central trunk includes a central bore.

9. The intervertebral spacer of claim 1 , wherein the central trunk, and the first and second radial flanges each have an anterior surface and a posterior surface.

10. The intervertebral spacer of claim 9 , wherein at least one of the plurality of holes in the first radial flange extends through the anterior and posterior surface.

11. The intervertebral spacer of claim 9 , wherein at least one of the plurality of holes in the second radial flange extends through the anterior and posterior surface.

12. The intervertebral spacer of claim 9 , wherein at least one of the plurality of holes in the central trunk extends through the anterior and posterior surface.

13. The intervertebral spacer of claim 9 , wherein at least one of the plurality of holes in the first radial flange, the second radial flange, and the central trunk extends through the anterior and posterior surface.
