Abstract

An apparatus is provided for selectively destroying dividing cells in living tissue formed of dividing cells and non-dividing cells. The dividing cells contain polarizable intracellular members and during late anaphase or telophase, the dividing cells are connected to one another by a cleavage furrow. The apparatus includes insulated electrodes to be coupled to a generator for subjecting the living tissue to electric field conditions sufficient to cause movement of the polarizable intracellular members toward the cleavage furrow in response to a non-homogeneous electric field being induced in the dividing cells. The movement of the polarizable intracellular members towards the cleavage furrow causes the breakdown thereof which adversely impacts the multiplication of the dividing cells, but does not damage non-dividing cells. In some embodiments, the electric field is guided to a desired target region by varying the sizes of the electrodes that are used to apply the electric field. In other embodiments, the electric field is guided to a desired target region (and/or away from other regions) by positioning one or more conductors in appropriate positions within the patient's body.

Claims (33)

1. An apparatus for selectively destroying dividing cells in a target area of living tissue, the dividing cells having polarizable or polar or charged intracellular members, the apparatus comprising:

a first insulated electrode;

a second insulated electrode;

an electric field source configured to apply an AC voltage between the first and second insulated electrodes,

a first intervening member disposed between the first insulated electrode and a first skin surface, the first intervening member comprising a material having a high conductance; and

a second intervening member disposed between the second insulated electrode and a second skin surface, the second intervening member comprising a material having a high conductance,

wherein the second intervening member is physically separate from the first intervening member, the first insulated electrode is of a smaller size than the second insulated electrode, and the first intervening member is of a smaller size than the second intervening member, and

wherein the first and second insulated electrodes and the first and second intervening members are configured to permit positioning with respect to the target area to induce an electric field in the target area that encourages the selective destruction of dividing cells in the target area, and with the first insulated electrode positioned closer to the target area than the second insulated electrode.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the AC voltage has a frequency of between about 50 KHz to about 500 KHz

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the AC voltage has a frequency of between about 100 KHz to about 300 KHz.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the AC voltage has a frequency of about 200 KHz.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the AC voltage has a frequency of between about 100 KHz to about 300 KHz and the electric field has a field strength in at least part of the target area of between about 0.1 and about 10 V/cm.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the intervening member comprises a conductive plate.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the intervening member further comprises a gel formed of at least one material selected from the group consisting of hydrogels, gelatins and agar.

8. An apparatus for selectively destroying dividing cells in a target area of living tissue, the dividing cells having polarizable or polar or charged intracellular members, the apparatus comprising:

a first insulated electrode;

a second insulated electrode;

an electric field source configured to apply an AC voltage between the first and second insulated electrodes, wherein the first and second insulated electrodes are positioned with respect to the target area to induce an electric field in the target area that encourages the selective destruction of dividing cells in the target area; and

at least one conductor disposed within the living tissue between the first and second insulated electrodes in close proximity to the target area, wherein the at least one conductor is positioned so as to increase the field density in the target area with respect to a baseline field density that would be present in the target area in the absence of the at least one conductor.

9. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the AC voltage has a frequency of between about 50 KHz to about 500 KHz.

10. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the AC voltage has a frequency of between about 100 KHz to about 300 KHz.

11. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the AC voltage has a frequency of about 200 KHz

12. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the AC voltage has a frequency of between about 100 KHz to about 300 KHz and the electric field has a field strength in at least part of the target area of between about 0.1 and about 10 V/cm.

13. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the at least one conductor is positioned so as to decrease the field density in a second region of the living tissue where application of a strong field is undesirable.

14. The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the at least one conductor is configured to shield a second region from the effects of the electric field.

15. The apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the at least one conductor comprises a conductive net that is disposed around at least a portion of an organ to be protected.

16. A method of selectively destroying dividing cells in a target area of living tissue, the dividing cells having polarizable or polar or charged intracellular members, the method comprising the steps of:

applying an AC voltage between a plurality of insulated electrodes that are positioned with respect to the target area to induce an electric field that encourages the selective destruction of dividing cells in the target area; and

positioning at least one conductor within the living tissue between the plurality of insulated electrodes in close proximity to the target area so that the field density in the target area increases with respect to a baseline field density that would be present in the target area in the absence of the at least one conductor.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the AC voltage has a frequency of between about 50 KHz to about 500 KHz.

18. The method of claim 16 , wherein the AC voltage has a frequency of between about 100 KHz to about 300 KHz.

19. The method of claim 16 , wherein the AC voltage has a frequency of about 200 KHz.

20. The method of claim 16 , wherein the AC voltage has a frequency of between about 100 KHz to about 300 KHz and the electric field has a field strength in at least part of the target area of between about 0.1 and about 10 V/cm.
